Pros

Its great to tell people that you work as BC - they are impressed, but assume you get to ride bikes all the time (the reality it very different)!

Cons

Senior managers talk the talk but regularly fail to deliver. The do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do SLT shun staff who question or challenge them to try and disguise their lack of knowledge of the sport. Turnover and sickness rates show that staff are burnt out, unsupported and dispensable.

Pros

Working for a sport you love, it’s filled with people who are passionate about what they do.

Cons

Having passionate people is a waste when British Cycling do not have high standards for productivity, professionalism or culture. British Cycling are good at saying they expect these things but their actions suggest something very different. When employees expect or display high standards they get no support or recognition and are made to feel they expect too much. Management staff are not organised enough to recognise or make changes that need to be made for the benefit of the organisation. Until British Cycling listen to employees and admit employees are not happy for very valid reasons, I’m afraid they will not be able to change to reach their potential.

Pros

Moments of flexibility whilst out coaching in the region's. Working closely with some fantastic members and the regional volunteer workforces. The opportunity to spread your own passion for sport development at a local level. The new chief exec seems to be a breath of fresh air and hopefully over time the culture of arrogance and nepotism can be removed from the organisation.

Cons

Lack of job security, early in my time with BC a cull of the regional workforce reduced the people in my role by 30%. These passionate, high performing and loyal coaches given just over a month's notice to reapply for limited positions. Lack of support, lack of development, unprofessional regional management who get protected by their chums further up the organisation. The pay is far below industry as are the fuel expenses. There is a distinct lack of mobility in the organisation. This is compounded by the lack of formal training and development, unless you are upper middle management... Then you get your own consultant.
