      A Large Mom & Pop Shop

      Pros

      Over 50 years they have built up a fairly good portfolio of work. Good people in the rail part of the business and a few others isolated in other areas.

      Cons

      Burns Group is run by two brothers; business evolved from father's practice. They still operate it like a mom & pop shop, showing severe favoritism to certain individuals. CEO is too believing in what his Mid-Level managers tell him. Does not see the big picture. Middle Managers have a hard time telling the truth. Middle Management are "yes" men, because they will be fired if they are not. Some Middle Management does not take responsibility for their own actions. Employees are pitted against each other.

      Pros

      Competitive pay, great culture/atmosphere, year-end bonuses, 401k match, fun social "after hours" outings/activities (but no pressure to participate). Company is growing rapidly, owners aggressively but wisely pursue growth opportunities through acquisitions and further development of existing client base/expertise.

      Cons

      Growing pains as company transitions from small to mid-size, difficulty defining/understanding roles (e.g. project engineer vs. project manager)

      none i can think of

      Cons

      joined burns about 6 months ago and no one ever told me it would get bought by private equity. everything has already begun to change. i thought i was coming to a healthy company that cared about the employees instead of the bottom dollar. i will leave first chance i get.
