A company that looked promising to work in at the time, but it had warning signs. Still might.
Pros
During my stint at Burrow, I really enjoyed working here at first! We were working out of a cute, humble little office and I felt appreciated and encouraged by my team. The work atmosphere was very upbeat and you could feel a buzz in the air, the work flow and workflow planning was very organized (sometimes). There were free breakfasts/lunches on Mondays and Wednesdays (if I remember correctly), we had our morning and weekly meetings to keep us all up to speed on what we were working on: it felt like a well-oiled machine. The employees I worked with were exceptional, talented and enthusiastic about what they do: you felt like you could even be friends with them outside of the office. And as the company grew, we eventually moved into a larger office space on W 27th St and things were looking up big time! The pay & benefits were great too, health insurance was fully covered by the company.
Cons
However, there definitely was some trouble brewing under the happy exterior. The company had all the warning signs that it was simply growing way too quickly; we were constantly being pushed on crunch time, the work/life balance was hellish at times. There were weeks when I'd work from 9AM-9PM or longer, back to back, and even with work on the weekends. I understand that each and every company has their crunch time periods, but they were stretching my team and I very thin. I grew extremely burnt out towards the end of my time at Burrow, yet I kept it quiet as I worried that mentioning this would be used against me. (Yes, their quarterly reviews were basically a tattle-tale sheet used against you) And it really looks like Burrow hadn't improved their company culture in that regard, judging from some of these recent reviews. Regarding the recent reviews by the way, I will also say that a lot of the issues being echoed in other Glassdoor reviews about Burrow are VERY true. The work culture at Burrow was very bro-centric and upper management really didn't take roles filled by women very seriously (unless they were directly responsible for money flow). I've personally seen at least 4 women get fired or leave the company because of this (including my superior), this led me and one freelance contractor to be the only people left on my team for a few months. Upper management didn't help matters either. I never felt truly appreciated or valued by the CEO, as Stephen simply thought of most of the company as expendable. I vividly remember him mentioning in a meeting one time, "You may be cool and funny to be around, but if you don't produce well: goodbye." It came off as very demeaning and authoritarian, I still remember the awkwardness amongst some of us after that meeting. Also the COO at the time (Steve F), he really had a Napoleonic complex, that's all I really can say. I really hope that Burrow has moved on from him, because the bromance between him and the CEO was really fueling some toxicity in the workplace. Plus, I'll be honest: a lot of the company events and games we had to part-take in (like the scavenger hunt) downright felt like forced fun and cringey. That's not to say that all company events & get-togethers weren't fun, some definitely were! It's just there were many times where the events felt... a bit canned and forced.
