Pros

Access to contract consulting at great companies...very challenging and lucrative.

Cons

Run as a black box... as a consultant you have no idea nor input into the clients they approach and are contacted by an email or phone call only at the last stage. In my 1 yr with them I have noted that client contact is run by people with little or no consulting experience thus proposals on the table frequently do not make sense or are sub-optimal for client needs.

Thanks for the feedback. We’re sorry to hear you felt that our process was opaque. Because our clients often approach us without much advance notice, we aren’t always able to get our consultants involved as early in the process as we might like. That said, we are always looking for ways to work closely with our talent. Project design and scoping are always done collaboratively; we have a ‘portfolio’ of SOW approaches and templates we find to be of high impact; should we not ultimately win an engagement we ask for immediate feedback from the client so that both BTG and our consultants can fine-tune our approach moving forward.

Pros

The Founders of business talent group are very intelligent women and it's cool that you get the opportunity to pick their brain.

Cons

Pay Structure:Bonus -This is not traditional sales in that your bonuses are taxed as a bonus not commission. In addition, there are many areas of the sales cycle that are out of your control and you are not compensated on what YOU bring to the table. Failing model -You learn real quickly that most executives are heavily biased towards independent consulting and if they choose to use independents they can normally hire from their own personal networks. I don't see BTG's model to be very scalable and the 60% growth they advertise is partially due to the fact they fire many of their employees. Terrible Management -BTG only believes in hiring from within. Unfortunately this means you'll have a 23 year old manager managing your career. I don't know about you, but I would feel uneasy with someone who's fresh out of MBA managing my career let alone a 23 year old out of undergrad. No mentorship plan -This is probably because BTG does not even have solid plan for itself. They call themselves a "consulting resource" but really they are a glorified staffing firm that cold calls executives and tries to convince them to use "their" independent consultants. They won't encourage you to learn more because then you'll leave before they get the chance to fire you.

Pros

Learn and grow stronger from the horrible work experience. Sometimes there's cake for birthdays. Build an extensive library of horrible boss stories to share at parties.

Cons

Associate positions are micromanaged by senior management. You can't get up to pee without having to tell your manager or supervisor. Every email is ripped apart and scrutinized by senior management. Associates, which are mostly made up of recent post-undergraduates with varying degrees, are expected to know all business acronyms and jargon or be ridiculed by senior management when they don't know the meaning. The opportunity for professional growth is non-existent. Promotions are meaningless because the work is exactly the same as the entry level positions as it is in higher ones but with higher stakes. You are pigeonholed to the one role you were assigned and if you express any professional interest in contributing something additional to the company, which would ultimately benefit everyone and the business, you are dismissed as being insubordinate. Seriously don't accept any position at this company.
