Pros

Great coffee, and a beautiful office and view in a high rise building in North Hills in Raleigh. They gave a company foundation that is connected that the company donated dollar for dollar every contribution an employee makes via payroll.

Cons

This company is very out of touch with what is really going on. They tell stories of and tout the importance of their culture, and the culture is the biggest problem. They are terrible at training mid-level managers, and people that have been there forever are lazy, catty, rude, back-stabbing and not managed well. It’s a hostile environment full of underpaid miserable people waiting for their next “brick bonus” (a bonus paid to non-financial advisors when enough large clients are won, to supposedly incentivize those ‘working hard’). I do believe many folks work hard, but they are not only not rewarded because they haven’t “existed” long enough (tenure is huge here, not an employee’s actual value to the company). I have seen countless incredible dynamic, intelligent, awesome people go because they weren’t rewarded or regarded for the quality work they did. It was really surprising to me the first few times in happened. But then it was me. I don’t understand this phenomenon - it seems incredibly short-sighted and counterintuitive. But then again, it depends on what you’re focused on as a company leader I guess. I was floored by how much gossiping, back-stabbing, and catty behavior exists at such a seemingly professional company, started by someone I respect immensely (Fielding Miller, the CEO). It’s largely a facade. The upper echelon of management is either not aware, or is so focused on growth and acquisitions or drilling their advisors to sell services at all costs that they don’t see the company foundation eroding underneath them. The people left are not the best of the best. They are the barnacle survivors of a forlorn tale they’ve been told. Or a promise they were sold. That the end will justify the means.

Pros

A few good managers here and there. Granola bars and fruit in the mornings.

Cons

Extremely old school company, run by absolute out of tough higher ups who are fat and happy on their shares. They’re not going anywhere. So what does that mean for you? That means you’re not going anywhere either, in terms of your career. Get settled into your position because you’ll be there for a while. If you get a “promotion” you’ll be doing the same job with a menial title change and equally as menial raise. CAPTRUST prides itself on their shareholder program. I’m sure it was great back in the day, but times have changed! You have to wait 3-4 years to become a “Shareholder” aka now you’re in “the club”. You even get a shirt now that declares your “Shareholder” status across the back (are you kidding me!?). You’re definitely treated as less-than before then. Lastly, management has been asking current and former employees to leave good reviews to improve their Glassdoor score. This is just NOT ok.

Pros

I would consider CAPTRUST a "small" company, although I'm sure the 10+ year veterans would disagree. To me, that is a pro. The actual office location is in the North Hills area of Raleigh, which is very central and convenient to a lot of places. They keep free drinks on hand and have "snack time" once a day. The senior level managers are all very approachable and seem to genuinely care.

Cons

CAPTRUST is a very "old school"firm/company. Work/life balance is not flexible and there is no working from home allowed. For a company as small as CAPTRUST internal communication is poor and the culture tends to be very secretive. The benefits are worse than average for the area/industry. The firm invests little to no money in technology to make employee's lives easier. There is little to no career path in client services. There are 5 positions with different titles that are essentially the same but you are given the title that goes along with how much experience you have.
