Great for clients, awful for employees

Pros

Awesome coworkers. Pays is decent.

Cons

Egotistical ownership. Abusive behavior for ownership. Micromanages employees of all levels. Openly disrespects employees in front of peers. Frequently puts down employees and then love bombs them with free food, drinks, or the occasional outing. It seems like ownership thinks the love bombing makes up for the frequent disrespect.

Unfortunately, I had to let 7 people go in August and September for a myriad of reasons, primarily due to a large contract loss. It was a very difficult decision and an extremely hard thing to do as I am acutely aware of the impact it had on the affected employees. This outcome is one which I have never been faced with in 37 years of running a successful business. I have always been a people first employer and the benefits we have offered reflect that with 28 paid days off per year, 401K matching, health insurance which we pay 87% of the employees’ premium, and opportunities for growth (In the last 5 years I have spent over $100K on additional training to help foster career growth). As the founder, owner, and CEO, I have stepped back and allowed my management team to run the day to day, so the micro-managing aspect of this review is baffling. My gut tells me that this is part of an organized effort by one or two past employees, and I feel saddened by their need to hurt the company and me. My advice would be to focus your energy on more positive things.

Pros

*The work of providing communications support to federal agencies focused on disease prevention, and health promotion & education is important. *Diverse staff, but that is probably federally mandated. *Pay was fair. *Benefits were decent.

Cons

*The leadership is clueless, toxic, and disingenuous. More emphasis is placed on personal politics than competence. *Poor leadership creates a toxic environment where employees don't feel they can be honest for fear of derision and reprisal. *Projects are poorly managed resulting in last minute efforts to complete the work. *Favoritism *Ageist remarks frequently made by leadership.
