Pros

CCSSO has a seat at the education policy table, allowing for great networking opportunities for staff. Before COVID, travel was frequent and allowed for a lot of meaningful on-the-ground professional development opportunities. Some staff members are amazingly capable, kind, and thoughtful about their work and its impact on students. Benefits are great and PTO is especially generous.

Cons

The characteristics of white dominant culture are pervasive, particularly defensiveness, quantity over quality, power hoarding, and paternalism. The organization focuses on protecting (and expanding) power, criticism of leadership is viewed as threatening and inappropriate, and this defensiveness creates an overall oppressive culture for staff. Strategy is increasingly guided by corporate dollars rather than what's really needed to move the needle for students and teachers. Workload is not evenly distributed among employees and compensation is wildly inequitable. Staff have to spend wasteful amounts of their energy navigating power dynamics within the organization rather than on producing quality work. Crying on the job is not uncommon.

Pros

Many colleagues are just wonderful people

Cons

CCSSO is top heavy, in the sense that there are too many at the top, they’re not that smart, and they don’t care about anyone else. This organization used to be prestigious and it has truly been run to the ground. I only have kept my job here because of the pandemic.

Not the place it used to be

Pros

Center of K-20 policy in the US

Cons

After leaving ccsso, nearly every single person I knew or worked with eventually left. Most were pushed out and needed to leave for their own mental health and well being. Ccsso was never a perfect place, but under previous leadership staff felt supported and listened to. Once leadership changed, it became almost a Trumpian organization, where leadership surrounds herself with people who won’t disagree with her and lacks basic empathy and emotional intelligence. HR can only be described as bullish and, at times, downright unethical. They 100% are not there to protect staff, but to protect the top. Innovation is not encouraged and has become an org that is essentially an intermediary for consultants even though staff is completely capable (and eager) to lead the work.
