Pros
As a PhD student, you get time (although that depends considerably on your boss) to pursue your interests.
Cons
Bureaucracy, crazy security rules, strict working hours. Sometimes you just cannot do your job because of some stupid security rules such as: impossibility to use wifi, to access the computer from the outside (unless you have a special permission and even in that case if fails half of the time). Very little incentive to perform better. Most of the people I've met within the institution were completely alienated by the system, complying with stupid rules without thinking for themselves. OK for a temporary job (there are good research teams) but horrible for a permanent position.
