Pros

Good company for an out of college undergrad to gain experience. Colleagues (fellow engineers) at your level are friendly and helpful. Safety, Quality, Maintenance are number one priority for the company. Pros: Company offsite trips Good 401 K

Cons

Safety Work Permits: You will be issuing safety work permits to the contractors/maintenance (which can consume 80% of you day sometimes) and will be expected to explain plant daily operations/troubleshooting. It is essentially the job of the Supervisor but you will be pushed into this without any training. This will be your primary responsibility but will not count towards your yearly review. Expect to spend 50% or more of your time on average without any recognition. On the positive side, this will add supervisory experience to your resume and will "make you look good." Technical Growth: There is no technical growth, any project scope development, P &IDs development etc (basically the engineering work in the job description) is handled by outside engineering consultants. Your role would be to put it in writing. There are no technical tools utilized to troubleshoot, instead you will rely on tribal knowledge acquired over 35 years and will have to make decisions in the blink. This again is a plus, if you have a low GPA and have struggled in the college to get your degree. Work Environment: Lot of drama/politics behind the scenes in management and disgruntled union operators. If one person (outside of your department) doesn't agree with your proposed change, he/she will use all the connections and tools available to ensure you fail. Union employees (with their benefits taken away slowly) inherently hate non-union salary employees. Expect all training/certification and any instructions you would give to the operators go unheeded and at the same time "own the process." On the positive side, this will teach you conflict resolution skills. Commute- About two hours of travel each day. If you are not into long commute, this company is not for you.

Disappointing lack of diversity

Pros

Fair pay and benefits Remote work options for non-plant personnel Family-owned - engaged family members Heart's in the right place with Safety

Cons

Good ol' boys club - especially in upper management/senior leadership - that trickles down to sites. Many sexist views are still actively promoted. Extremely conservative culture that makes others with different ideas hold back on providing valuable feedback. Profess need for innovation, but not open to new or external ideas. The few women in senior leadership are limited to support functions.
