Pros

Benefits are really good. Salary is okay, but not competitive with private sector.

Cons

Constantly shifting priorities, too much work for understaffed organization, unrealistic expectations. Performance reviews are not constructive, but are used by management as a "stick" to punish discourage employees. Morale is very low. Haven't had real raises in over 10 years, despite budget increases. Overwhelming number of managers have never read a management book, taken a course on organizational behavior, or necessarily understand their role. There is a steady turnover of younger employees who move on to better jobs. Employees are retiring early because they are fed up. Most people I work with hate their job, hate their boss, and just try to stay under the radar.

Pros

Excellent benefits (retirement, health insurance, fee waiver to attend college, etc.) Hours are good (rarely more than 40 hours per week) Low expectations mean low stress most of the time.

Cons

Filthy facilities. Incompetent management (and too many of them). Little respect or support for employees. No chance for promotion / raises. Most employees put as little effort as possible into their work and are often not knowledgeable within their field.

Pros

The students are wonderful. The pay is decent as are the benefits. There are quite a few committed faculty.

Cons

The administration runs the school like a corporation. Faculty are overworked, lecturers are overworked AND underpaid, students are pushed through the school as if they are on an assembly line, the overall climate of the campus is toxic. For a school with such a racially diverse student body, the racism apparent on campus is palpable and sexual harassment is de rigueur. There is a lot of talk of equity, but no actual solutions and administration is by and large horribly disrespectful to the people that work there.
