Pros

I departed Cadmus some years ago after serving years as a senior manager. My summary: prospective investors and senior managers, be skeptical. Junior- and mid-level staff, be open to working there in the short-term, but skeptical of staying for the long-term. The strengths of Cadmus are in its mission and its junior- and mid-level staff. The mission is compelling, focusing on improving the human experience. If you seek such mission-oriented work you could be a good fit, at least initially. The vast majority of staff are hard-working, well-meaning, and eager to please. It was a joy for me to work with them, and to supervise some of them.

Cons

First comes the (internally) well-known dysfunction in the executive suite. Duplicity and disrespect rule the day, the exact opposite of providing a supportive, trusting atmosphere. I personally witnessed a consistent pattern of exec dysfunction during my tenure, and it’s not just my opinion: trusted confidants at my level reported many more instances. What the execs forget is this: 1) people seek trust, and 2) people talk, especially when they don’t witness and receive the trust they seek. It doesn’t have to be this way. As proven in “Good to Great” by Jim Collins, when company execs lead with the goal of putting the organization first, with mindful, genuine communication to the staff, a healthy culture permeates from the top down. Employees feel part of a greater, well-run whole. Organizational excellence leads to higher profits and lasting market dominance. Bottom line: think seriously about what you want from your engagement with Cadmus, and how dependent your goals are on the behavior of the execs. Most of them put their own interests before the organization’s.

Pros

You are able to work on a variety of projects and specialties at Cadmus. Your schedule is flexible and a new bonus structure has been put in place for billability.

Cons

The mid level staff are dropping like flies because of low pay. That leaves management and new staff (6 months or less) to do the work. I've seen staff (especially engineers) leave to competitors anywhere from 3 months to 2 years after working at Cadmus. The last year and a half I have seen 11 engineers leave Cadmus and roughly 20 non engineering staff leave. Something is obviously wrong, I can't speak for everyone but pay has been the most common reason stated in my experience.

Pros

Perfect employer for moralless, micromanaging masochists who like watching rocks grow. If you've ever wanted to work 60 hours in a week on a proposal then get ordered to work weekends for not doing enough billable work, this is a great opportunity. If you have an advanced degree but miss life as an undergraduate intern, Cadmus works at just the right level of sophistication. You'll spend months doing mindless data entry and making minor formatting adjustments to documents. The culture is really supportive of people who distrust others, and like demanding compliance on the smallest issues. If this describes you, you'll be promoted fast. Just avoid being supportive of other people; that's really frowned upon. Also great for small government advocates: Cadmus seemingly exists to leech as much money from the government as possible.

Cons

Multiple employees have been hired to positions they did not apply for to do work they do not enjoy and are not qualified for. No opportunities for professional growth. Salaries are significantly below competitors and public sector consulting generally (If you're interested in Homeland Security consulting, go to Hagerty Consulting or CNA. They pay better, are more prestigious, and have better reputations.)
