Thanks for taking time to provide your feedback. Like you, I truly believe that our cause is really important for the charitable sector in Canada. The technology we build and the education we provide reaches the smallest charities in every corner of this country, and without it, thousands of charities would not be able to fund their work. Thank you also for recognizing the great environment that the management has created and encouraged through our policies. We’re committed to having an open and collaborative office. We have a very skilled management team who is committed to the work that we do; however, there is always room for improvement of course. We’ve created many opportunities for all staff to provide input into decision-making, and share a common framework: annual plans are created from the bottom up and from each team, we hold regular town halls, share all numbers and reports, and regularly ask for staff input through anonymous SWOT surveys. Improving communication and soliciting input will continue to be hugely important as we scale. I’m committed to working on it.

Pros

I have encountered many great people working at the company. They eventually get broken due to such a toxic work environment, which is a shame.

Cons

I really do not take this lightly and I know for a fact that my review is unfortunately not a unique experience. I also believe that someone from the company will write a response to this review trying to cast doubts about it. Their response will be a lie. Remember We Charity? CanadaHelps is not too far off. The company prides itself as a nonprofit but operates very much like a for profit organization, focusing on revenue growth at all costs. Bigotry and discrimination are systemic. Most of the time it's not overt, but you should be prepared to face a barrage of micro-aggressions on a daily basis if you are a POC and/or LGBTQ+. But sometimes the bigotry is in your face, from slurs to inappropriate comments. In addition to that, sexual harassment disguised as jokes is something really common, especially if you are a woman. And the worst of it? HR and management are aware of these issues and do not care. Many in management perpetuate the same behaviour. And why is that? Because again, they only care about the bottom-line/revenue growth. If a manager or employee "performs" well enough, they will brush everything off, gaslight you and eventually push you out if you try to raise concerns. Now, many people could have a great time CanadaHelps. If they can, it's either because they are a part of this toxicity, oblivious to it, or because they are junior enough to not be involved in more serious projects and/or have their time seriously invested in the company. If there is anything I could get out of my awful experience there, and after seeing so many people going through the same, is that I can warn future hires to not work at CanadaHelps. You will be overworked and won't learn much, at best. Please consider another organization that honours being a nonprofit and that actually cares about its employees and the community at large.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments. We take all feedback seriously. We have very clear policies to deal with any type of violence and harassment, which includes involving a third-party if warranted to investigate complaints. All employees are provided with a copy of the policy and trained on reporting procedures, which includes clear protections against retaliation for any complaints made in good faith. We are committed to a safe work environment, and to openness and transparency in our culture. All complaints raised have always been thoroughly investigated and responded to, and no employee has ever been terminated or retaliated against for bringing forward any concerns. The organization’s commitment to charities and our staff is at the core of who we are and it is unfortunate that your impressions do not reflect that.

Great Co-Workers - Micro-Management

Pros

Really great work atmosphere among co-workers. Driven and compassionate people, interested in their work. Lots of learning, a unique environment.

Cons

Micro-managing; not of "favourite" staff though. Tiered structure in company: "lower-level" employees not respected. Too much blame not enough self-awareness of real cause of problems.
