Pros

It has very nice and helpful people. Some brilliant people, too, although you don't get access to all of them all the time. You can tell that before the pandemic the team seems fun. Bonuses are good, too (if targets are met). Company does an excellent job of punching above its weight for a small company that's less than 80 people globally and has a rev. of less than fifteen M.

Cons

The company talks about a lot of trends as an analyst firm which it doesn't practice - like hybrid work. You're required to be in the office on certain days or at least in close proximity to the office - otherwise you are converted to a contractor (in other markets) unless local government rules otherwise due to pandemic restrictions. I think the base pay is also below average - they use the bonus as a carrot, but really it's not much. The benefits are pretty sub-standard, too (but not surprising considering it's a tiny company). There's also really no talent mobility. If you join the company in one role, you will likely be in that role for the rest of your career in Canalys. Despite proclaiming to have an open culture or an analyst culture where you are encouraged to share opinions, it's not always the case as some ideas are quickly shot down, hindering innovation. In a lot of ways, the company is very hierarchical - you are expected to speak to higher ups at a certain way and sometimes you cannot challenge them or voice your opinion. It's also a relatively unknown brand - it's not like people will say "Oh yes Canalys I know that company" - and you have to explain what the company does. So if you're a young person/fresh grad and think "what will this do to my CV and my career overall?" the answer is it doesn't really do much. You basically join the company for work experience for two years max (three is pushing it) and then leave. Wish they had a better career progression.

Pros

Good customers, basic compensation, not much time off.

Cons

This is a very small but very global company. You will be expected to do business very early in the morning and very late at night. With the occasional meeting in the early AM. This company does not subscribe to any Saas, no online collaboration software, NO CRM! No contact manager! They use outlook as their CRM! No services marketing or advertising. no sales team, no marketing team, no leads. No automated marketing software. They have basically banned internal email and discourage external email. Standard American English and Slang scares them! They think that british business culture is how you conduct business in the states! They have it all backwards.

Research firm but research not a priority

Pros

Decent pay. Freedom in how you complete your work within the deadline.

Cons

You will be expected to learn on your own. No HR department. Management talks about an open working culture but reality is that employees are expected to listen and accept what management decides. Research firm but preoccupied with being quoted in news sites rather than focusing on improving research methodologies. During the pandemic, marketing’s message to the analysts was to invest in ring lights, better webcams and wireless headphones instead of guidance on how the company will be supporting clients.
