Pros

Canvas is a company tackling the challenge of getting robots to be useful in dynamic environments. I would describe it as a work hard, play hard place to work. We tackle difficult challenges and set ambitious goals, but also are provided with lots of opportunities to relax and connect with our coworkers. The leadership works hard to foster a healthy work/life balance at the company and encourages everyone to take breaks and vacations when they need them. It is also a company that works hard to make sure everyone's voice is heard, whether it's to raise concerns or voice ideas. Lastly, Canvas's technology is already being used in the real world of construction every day. For me, this is the most exciting part of working here -- seeing and facilitating the use of cutting edge technology outside of the lab.

Cons

Over my time at Canvas, I've seen us hit stages of growing pains. It is a young company tackling a tough challenge and there isn't a perfect "How To" guide for how to run a company like this one. Every year or so, we hit a point where communication becomes less efficient and the processes we've put into place to support our work are no longer useful. This can make getting your job done frustrating and inefficient. That being said, I've found the leadership to be quick to recognize these inefficiencies, quick to implement solutions for them and generally quick to adapt to changing circumstances. Also, again, all employees are encouraged to participate in finding a better way.

Pros

Canvas is hands down the best company I've ever worked for. I'm proud to work here and am looking forward to what's ahead for us - Coworkers are incredibly capable, empathic, and genuine people who care about the work they do and how it impacts others. General vibe of positivity, kindness, and a desire to be helpful that makes for a motivating work environment - Leadership is humble/low ego, willing to listen with an open mind, rare combination of high IQ paired with high EQ, and high integrity. Decisions are made thoughtfully, with consideration for how they affect various stakeholders - Wonderful and unique culture. Very diverse bunch of people that genuinely enjoy spending time together. People pitch in to plan fun events that feel authentic and DIY (potlucks, taking turns cooking meals to celebrate software releases, happy hours, and offsites) -Industry changing product. We're building robots and working closely with construction workers to deploy them in the real world. It's very rewarding to see engineers and union tradespeople working side by side to make the product better and how everyone truly cares about the outcome -Good work life balance. Leadership actively encourages people to take time off and unplug. There are busy periods, but across the board work hours are great, especially by startup standards

Cons

Compared to other companies I've been at, Canvas is much better at getting ahead of things before they become real issues, but like any startup it has its drawbacks - Projects/initiatives get started but peter out without follow through as priorities shift. Important stuff does tend to get done, however - COVID and work from home has eroded vibrancy of the culture somewhat - We're still at the stage where people need to be scrappy and take on some of the unglamorous tasks that might be handled by an admin, office manager, etc at more established companies. Upside is little to no bureaucracy and a lot more latitude
