Finance - Good starting job but that's about it

Pros

-Great benefits with health premium fully paid for and 12% SEP (no match required). -Learn a lot about the health insurance industry. -The software skills learned on the job are useful and transferable (would be 1 star but this point makes it 2)

Cons

-Low base pay. -High turnover. My department was completely different a year after I joined. -Lack of quality communication across Finance and throughout company make it difficult to make a difference. This bad communication resulted in me doing extra work/completely redoing projects. -Very low admin budget means outdated technology, seemingly simple tasks took a long time due to lack of tools and systems which were setup poorly. -A company culture that despises change. -Lack of quality mentors. My boss and even his boss would not know the answers to my questions. -Micro-management is hit or miss depending on which department you are placed in, it didn't end up being a problem for me but it was a big problem for others. -The CFO cannot articulate what he wants (or won't specify until after you're done) which results in constant work/rework for no reason. -There's no room for career growth. Even if I were promoted, I would be doing the exact same work as the current position.

Pros

-Tallahassee itself is a nice town to raise a family in. -I had some great coworkers that were the only reason I didn't go into a full depression. -Benefits are truly wonderful. Easily the best benefits of any company I have ever worked at. -The director is a great person. Very well spoken and seems to have the knowledge necessary to create a great department. -If you need a job right out of college to gain some experience and no one else is hiring, I would take this one. Work here for a year and then leave to someplace sane. -I rarely worked more than 8 hours in a day, but that was because I was efficient at my job. This was not a difficult task because the work was mostly things which could be automated.

Cons

-Technology is atrocious. The computers looked like they were from 2000. -2 of the 3 "actuarial managers" were inept and I question whether they could do basic mathematics, let alone complex forecasting. -2 of the 3 managers used fear to try and intimidate employees. -Very little guidance on anything that I was tasked to do. A big part of that was because the manager had no idea how to do anything. Anytime I asked them a question, they would look at me like I had spoken to them in a foreign language. -Starting pay was outrageously poor, but is acceptable for Tallahassee since the cost of living isn't that much. -Work environment was so upsetting, even if the company offered me 5x my prior salary, I wouldn't go back. No amount of money is worth being that unhappy.

Pros

Amazing benefits especially if you have a family. The salary is pretty good based on location, but not competitive when you look at any other company that employees actuaries. Decent work/life balance, they used to make us come in on weekends but they no longer do that.

Cons

There is no professional development. I have had to explain basic mathematical concepts to everyone that is above me. Very much dedicated to 80's corporate culture. Sending e-mails in the chain of command is the norm/enforced, e.g. if sally on team A wants to ask for something from Joey on Team B she has to send an e-mail to her boss who sends it to their director who sends it to another director who sends it to Joey's boss who then sends it to Joey. There is version proliferation for software on company computers. Many people's jobs only exist due to them hoarding information from others, they aren't actually capable of producing any quality work. Multiple managers use fear-based management tactics to get employees to do things. You will at some point be asked to do something that is unethical, tell them NO they will try to pressure you but if you stand firm they will back down. In addition to all this, the company is not growing so there is no room for career growth.
