Pros

The women (subordinates) are easy to get along with, work remote once a week

Cons

All male executive team, if you are not on that team it feels like you don't have a voice. Promises of equal salary, but it's way below market. Disorganized, poor guidance and leadership, no internal promotions, toxic work environment. Lunch breaks are frowned upon unless it's with the whole team. You get negative feedback for taking a breather outside.

Thank you for being a part of the Carrum family this past year and for your feedback. I’m going to do my best to address your concerns and am happy to continue this conversation with you any time offline. As you know, being a start-up in the Bay Area comes with unique challenges — building a health tech company and reinventing the industry is hard! Personally, as COO, I’m proud of the work we’ve done to foster a collaborative environment, prioritize diversity, and give talented team members career growth opportunities. I find it a bit surprising to hear you had such a negative experience and I wish we could have discussed more in-person before you left so that we could have improved things for you. A few specific notes: This last year we advanced several existing team members into new departments and the majority of those promotions were women. As far as compensation goes, many other employers don’t provide some of the benefits we offer like a stock option plan, weekly work from home days, a bay-front office with water views, nature trails for walking meetings, and sponsored team outings. We know there’s always room to improve, but we do our best and have evidence to support that the full comp package is in line with the market. Regarding organization — you’re right — processes are not as established at an early stage company as they are in larger corporations. It’s not for everyone, but it can be invigorating (and even rewarding) for some. With that said, we are continuing to improve on that front as we evolve. Lastly, you are also correct that we need more diversity in our leadership team. This is something we are actively working on and will continue to do so as the company grows. Reach out any time you’d like to discuss more of the above; I’d love to hear from you. Dan

Pros

Some co-workers are great to work with. The mission is meaningful - helping people with various underlying health conditions is purposeful. 100% remote which is nice.

Cons

Where to begin? First and foremost things at Carrum are chaotic. Work gets chucked over the fence to various teams, everything is a priority and needs done yesterday. The systems and processes are severely lacking making most work manual and repetitive. Deadlines are so pressed work is often not reviewed. Simple asks/tasks take an extensive amount of time because the company will not properly staff up it's departments. This translates to late nights, weekends, holidays - whatever it takes to meet these deadlines with little to no support. What's worse is they won't invest in streamlining various workflows in order to complete these asks in a timely fashion. Probably the most concerning part about Carrum is the leadership. There has been a significant amount of turnover at the C suite level within the past year. CFO stepped down CTO left CCO (chief commercial officer) left What's also concerning is glassdoor ratings are a KPI which impacts bonus - hence why there's not an abundance of negative reviews - most people don't want to negatively impact the bonus potential of the existing employee base. Leadership leaves little to no room for employees to bring their own ideas to the table. If you're a "yes man" you'll fit right in. Otherwise be prepared for C suite level leadership to micromanage your work and insist you do what they want, the way they want it - with little to no input from you at all.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your perspective. We appreciate your honest feedback and are glad to hear that you’ve found meaning in our mission and enjoy working with your teammates. We recognize that many teams are carrying heavy workloads right now. We’re actively working through our internal planning process to approve additional roles for the remainder of the year, ensuring appropriate staffing and support where it’s most needed. At Carrum, we’re constantly balancing our goals of growth and achieving financial sustainability. We know this sometimes leads to tough trade-offs, and we’re committed to doing our best to navigate these thoughtfully and transparently. As we continue to grow through different phases of a company’s lifecycle, our leadership team will need to evolve, and we will continue to communicate candidly about these transitions in All Hands. We deeply value the contributions of every leader and Carrumite who’s helped shape Carrum to date. We’re confident in the team we have in place and their commitment to our mission, our people, and our future. We also want to clarify that while we do track Glassdoor ratings as an OKR — because they’re one of several important signals of employee experience — they are not in any way tied to bonuses. As shared in our FY’25 bonus plan (which is available to all employees), bonus criteria are based on company and individual performance, not Glassdoor reviews. If you’re open to it, we’d welcome the chance to better understand your experience and suggestions. Pros

A handful of smart, caring colleagues who do their best despite the environment. Healthcare is an important space, and the mission could be meaningful if it were authentic.

Cons

Leadership frequently misleads both employees and clients. Promises are made that the company cannot (or will not) deliver, and then employees are left to manage the fallout. Client-facing dishonesty is especially troubling: results are overstated, commitments are downplayed, and transparency is sacrificed for the sake of closing deals. Internally, the same pattern repeats—goals shift, feedback is spun, and trust erodes quickly. A culture of “say what sounds good, worry about the truth later” permeates the organization. Morale suffers when employees are pressured to support narratives they know aren’t accurate.
