Bad apples that are going to drive the business to the ground

Pros

I met some amazing individuals while working here from all aspects of the business. Working with good people always makes the job a little bit easier, however…..

Cons

I was a part of the many companies that got acquired by Cart. They sell you on being the next big thing, however they are so driven on “driving the boat forward” they don’t realize all the holes they have on their ship. I’m assuming they promise investors “x” and are way ahead of their skis. What does that create? Chaos. You over promise and under deliver on EVERY aspect of the business guys. And who do you leave out to hang to dry? The people putting in the daily work. You have a moving target on everything and never explain the “why”. It’s always “this is the new objective get it done or your gone”. I had such high hopes with Cart taking over, but to be honest, the decision makers don’t know what they are doing. It’s a sad knowing that it’s not a matter of IF good employees are going to be released, but rather what’s the next decision that is going to make my job disappear. Tbh, it’s a matter of time till this business sinks. Omair, you are a good guy my friend, but you should’ve handed off the rains many moons ago. You are a forward thinker, not an operator and god knows not a culture expert.

Profit over People

Pros

Very few. There’s some really wonderful and intelligent people, but they’re all leaving rapidly.

Cons

Executive team is extremely manipulative, will make false promises to keep you on the team for as long and as cheap as possible; until they find a cheaper AI option or a resource to outsource to (they barely even have an HR department which is insane for a company that’s so big - it’s literally just robots and outsourced HR platforms that barely integrate)… Make sure you have EVERYTHING they promise you in writing, preferably signed by them; from mass layoffs being announced day-of, to the CEO answering (not quite verbatim) “who f*ckin’ knows, man, could be next week!” during a Q&A session when someone asked whether Cart is planning more layoffs; the morale here is well below freezing. And no wonder; I’ve seen someone laid off without a moment’s notice with only months left on her visa to find a job (or face deportation) after she had been working on the team for nearly a decade. I’ve seen employees turn down job offers for other companies because Cart will meet them with a “better” counter-offer, only to fire them by the end of the year (they LOVE a nice holiday-time mass layoff; perfect gift to tide us over while we wait for our “deferred” bonuses!)… On a larger-scale, Cart has no idea what they’re doing. Their business model relies on simply buying up profitable companies, stripping them of (a collective couple decades worth of) process, staff, structure, and even our offices, and still expects them to increase in profitability. Tony, Omair, and a lot of the c-suite are just so out of touch; when I learned that they had (allegedly) been coached on their personalities, I couldn’t believe it, because I couldn’t imagine them being more insufferable. Every time a mass layoff happens, they say the same thing: “THIS is the team that’s gonna take us TO THE MOON” - until the next layoffs, after which they say “I know we’ve lost a lotta people but to be honest guys, when I look at who we have left here, I’m feeling BULLISH about this team” All joking aside (wait, I’m actually not joking - I don’t even need to exaggerate), working here felt like a fever dream of everything that’s wrong with this idea that you can make passive, automated profit by squeezing the workforce out of the company; ironic for an organization whose core tenant is “Be Human”. Though “valued” as a Unicorn, Cart’s actually profitability is, well, really more like a donkey with a carrot taped to its head. Will the donkey ever realize he’s not a unicorn? Or will he he be so ravenous that he chases his carrot-horn off a cliff, so distracted by his insatiable appetite for the vegetable strapped to his head that he forgets to look at where he’s going?

Cart.com Response

As a startup we recognize that our communication and processes are still evolving. We are committed to continuous improvement in these areas. Also, Cart.com has had to flex its business strategy based on what the market and our customers have communicated are their needs. Therefore, some difficult decisions around organizational structure have had to be made to support these changes and ensure the long-term growth and sustainability of our organization. While no leader ever wants to make these kinds of decisions, they are necessary business decisions. Of course, morale can be impacted by these changes, and we have been concisely focused on supporting our teams with care through these situations and post helping our teams through constructive change management and reinvigorating employee engagement, and satisfaction. Lastly, a core component of our business growth strategy is Mergers and Acquisitions. Fit for purpose M&A helps us strategically enhance revenue, business capabilities, and our team capabilities. This results in greater support and service offerings for our customers. We acknowledge working at a startup is difficult, were not perfect, but we are invested in learning and growing every day and enhancing our employee satisfaction and customer satisfaction. We can confidently say that we are moving these satisfaction levels in the right direction.

Toxic culture, Peter-Principle leadership

Pros

Competitive pay, and one time they let the remote employee's order snacks.

Cons

The culture that I experienced was incredibly toxic. The leadership style was Fear & Intimidation as a form of motivation. It was not uncommon to hear someone publicly criticized during a team meeting. No cohesion or sense of organization/vision. Very little collaboration (or cooperation) between teams. The technology stack is outdated While the pay was competitive, the benefits package was well below standard. Lack of trust between teams.
