Pros

- Amazing product people and overall good engineers - All the normal startup things like free drinks and snacks - Flexible work structure - CEO seems to be solid

Cons

There's a lot... - Stock options aren't guaranteed. If you leave before they approve you leaving, they will not give you your stock options. Read the contract fine print carefully!! Despite having vested options, they will buy them back if you leave before they think you should - There's an unlimited PTO option, but it's not really unlimited. I've heard of multiple people having to reschedule vacations or be asked to leave the company if they don't. Almost always because of an artificial deadline or something that better decision making/planning would have avoided - People do not like to hear the truth - they promote people that say everything is great and there are no issues with the technology and freeze out the people who try to raise issues with the tech - Engineering leadership vacuum: the CTO bounces between being AWOL and micro managing UI focused team. Often feels like leadership plays favorites with certain people. - They will low ball you on your salary and make you feel bad about it at the same time There's lots of issues with this company despite having some really great people. You're much better off with a different company in the Chicago area

We are always sad to hear someone didn’t have a solid experience with us and accept negative feedback as an opportunity to improve. At Catalytic, we are completely transparent about stock options (and pretty much everything else); we hold public Q&A sessions and encourage employees to ask questions - including anonymously - and be vocal about concerns regarding any company policy, including options. We do not bury anything in “fine print.” Stock options are not guaranteed unless you remain an employee of Catalytic. The purpose of a stock option is to incentivize employees to remain at Catalytic. If an employee elects to leave or is terminated, Catalytic reserves the option to repurchase exercised shares. The repurchase price is based on the fair market value of the option at the time of termination, so the employee is compensated for any increase in value realized during his/her tenure. Having this flexibility enables us to reallocate stock options to new employees. We encourage you to discuss this issue further with us if you are considering employment with Catalytic. With respect to unlimited PTO, the co-founders (CEO and CTO) encourage and support downtime to recharge. We are a start-up so PTO of a week or more should be coordinated in advance, be reasonable (taking two months off a few times per year is not reasonable) and is subject to interruption by a phone call or e-mail if necessary - “necessary” as defined by Merriam-Webster. If you get your ducks in a row before you go, you should be able to get the rest & relaxation you deserve. To be frank, technology can always be better and Catalytic is not perfect. We use Slack and have a public Slack channel dedicated to triage/bug reporting with awards going to the people reporting the most bugs; raising issues is encouraged. We promote those who work hard and, in fact, most of our leaders are also our biggest critics - the key differentiator is identifying solutions along with issues. Good advice for everyone: ensure you are satisfied with your salary prior to accepting employment with any company. If we make an offer that is not fair, tell us - the last thing we want is a dissatisfied employee on day 1. Employees leave jobs for a variety of reasons; Catalytic is a demanding environment that will push you to be your very best. Anything less than your best is a disservice to the person sitting next to you as well as the clients relying on you to deliver.

Pros

* Great friendships created that will be with me for a lifetime. * Before Covid we had game nights and outings together and a great office life * Caring and supportive team in every department * Very powerful product

Cons

* CEO. All the issues with Catalytic are created in this office from an incoherent sale and marketing strategy to everyone having to stroke his ego to get approval for the smallest task. He is both vindictive and aloof. Involved in everything and responsible for nothing. The team is led into poor execution and decisions without support. He wants to dabble in everything and avoid the responsibilities of this office unless it serves his ego or whim. He is passive aggressive enough that long term employees avoid him. Lazy. Do not trust when he takes an interest in you or your ideas. He does not care and you should be wary of interacting with him. He is loyal to none and lacks empathy and skill. He is leading the company to failure, and many of the top lieutenants are leaving or have left. * CTO is a legit genius and nice guy 99% of the time but the 1% when he is overworked can be hard to cope with. I have seen him build completely new solutions out of thin air and go without sleep for days to meet a commitment. However, he gets snappy on those long drives and can negate all the good things he does for you with ill-intentioned words. Nobody really pushes him to take care of himself. Like many at Catalytic he could be an even bigger rock star for the company but is often caught up fixing minutia and irritable with lack of rest. In the many years here, I never had the same marketing and sales strategy over the course of 2 weeks. Many metaphors were attempted and thesis length CEO narratives that didn't hang together were pushed on the team. Sales was definitely not nurtured and often ignored and good opportunities were lost to poor executive leadership and decisions. No clear path to career opportunities.
