Pros

Used to be a wonderful place to work.

Cons

In the past Centra was a great place to work. Once the CEO retired it was never the same. The new CEO and the people directly under him are purely money driven. A certain physician that was hired under the CEO is completely clueless when it comes to EMR, health information, transcription, etc. and decided to close down the entire transcription department in order to obtain a high tech speech recognition system that has been shown over the years to be a complete disaster in a hospital setting. The other physician that was hired as well has the most horrible personality and is down right rude to employees. We have personally heard physicians make sexist remarks about nurses as well as derogatory, hateful comments about patients and/or their families; their behavior is the most unprofessional I have ever seen in the many years I have worked in the medical field! They are also finding "ways" to hike up a patient's bill which I find absolutely mean and greedy to do to the patients. Other practices such as examining a "sleeping patient" I find totally perverse and unethical. Patients are also being charged by a rounding physician, even if the patient has gone to get an x-ray, etc., and is not even in the room.

Pros

The overwhelming majority of nurses there truly want to make a difference and to care for their patients. They've made some great patient-oriented changes, like with dietary menu.

Cons

Staff cuts have made this a less than favorable environment to work and pt safety is at risk. If there aren't shortages, then nurses shouldn't be REQUIRED to work additional 8 or more hours. You cannot give "excellent care every time" without the support of management. Some areas are much stronger in this respect than others. Not keeping seasoned nurses. It is NOT a salary issue! New grads, do yourself a favor. Before you go into a high pressure, high stress area, like ER or critical care, get a year of nursing experience. It goes a long way in helping to prevent burnout and realize that you have chosen a difficult field and the reality of it is hard! Don't precept with someone who just graduated last year. Chances are, she's still learning too!

Pros

Steady income. Kind, caring, friendly employees from EVERY department in the hospital. Most of my own department coworkers are amazing! I NEVER have to work there again!

Cons

Pay as compared to other large healthcare companies in our area. Incompetent management in the department that I left. I understand this is not an isolated problem at Centra. Lack of job security as fear of being fired every day per MANY current and former (including myself) employees. Lack of support for staff from said managers. My former managers were vindictive and unprofessional on many occasions.
