Pros

A modest paycheck once a month

Cons

It's a scam. Their best pitch is that PhDs find a job because they joined our network, but the proof is all ex post facto. If you're considering joining, take the word of someone who was on the inside: save your money, and reach out to job recruiters instead. They put spyware on your computer, they buy the cheapest computers for the job, the CEO is rude, condescending, and frankly just weird. It's a hostile work environment, the Operations person treats employees like children. Whoever you are, if you're reading this, be warned. Working here will be the worst decision you ever make. They have the most clueless people in charge of departments - they truly have risen to their level of mediocrity.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Our leadership team appreciates all feedback from team members. Cheeky Scientist is a rapidly growing company many highly qualified team members. We are sorry that you felt your leaders did not give you enough guidance, often in start up companies team members are given a great amount of autonomy to do their jobs which is not an atmosphere for everyone and may be somewhat difficult for some team members to adapt to. We wish you the best in your next endeavor.

Pros

The overall goal of the company is to help PhDs find meaningful careers outside of academia, so it’s rewarding to see members achieve this.

Cons

You will be overworked and underpaid. You will work weekends, holidays, while you are on vacation, when you are sick, early in the morning, late at night... you name it. You will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 12-14 hour days are not only common, but expected. The CEO is extremely manipulative, unprofessional, and will regularly belittle you in front of the entire team for no reason. If you bring up concerns about this or about other issues in the workplace, he will tell you to stop wasting his time or that you are being too sensitive. I truly would not wish working at Cheeky Scientist on my worst enemy. It’s a horrible experience and will leave you with borderline PTSD. I’m so happy I got out of there!

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience as we appreciate all feedback from current and former employees. We do understand that many support based jobs that include a bonus plan often require extra dedication on the part of the team member, though our salaries for support associates without any experience or secondary education are very competitive. Often positions at start up companies are challenging as well. We hope that you find a position that is a better fit for you in your next endeavor.

Big on job-coaching promises, low on delivery

Pros

The earlier core team were good and provided mentoring albeit by trial and error to the first few who were lucky to get one-on-one coaching. People in the group are inherently good people, who want to genuinely support others, but have no clear training model. The community is great but you don't need to pay such a steep price for purely networking alone.

Cons

Most people joining the Cheeky group as job seekers end up becoming mentors by default; so in a sense it's a case of blind leading the lead. We ourselves had no clue but are made to conduct live facebook training on certain topics (despite not having had job success of our own). Too much chaos, as the CEO keeps expanding the member list to the facebook group. The few who are joining in at the interviewing stage may do well, but many job seekers who join are languishing due to lack of clear direction. You pay $$$ to join the program. Then the CEO keeps on adding newer $$$ courses, to compensate for the lack of adequate mentorship support or clear direction. You may join the Cheeky group as a job resource, but then you find newer groups with steep membership prices that make big promises and some kind of certificate program, but in essence the same wine in a new bottle. There's a Research scientist membership, Accountability membership, groups by every single job title you can find.

Thank you for taking the time to review the team at Cheeky Scientist. We always appreciate all feedback and strive to improve at all times. Generally this is not a forum for client reviews but we want to make sure to address any concerns. We absolutely take coaching and consulting with our new members very seriously and are always available for supporting members 24 hours a day. Please reach out to support@cheekyscientist.com and we would love to make sure you get enough one-on-one coaching with one of our PhD team members. Thank you!
