Pros

Good engineers and nice people in my software team.

Cons

Chessable is a very political workspace. Briefly, it’s not one company it’s part of the larger Play Magnus Group. The interaction with the “group” is very complicated. Briefly there is always political issues between the group companies. Too many decision makers, and none of them is technology based. The leadership has no idea how to manage a tech company. It’s really managed as a book publisher and thus unable to scale up the business even during the pandemics.

Pros

The people on the ground (devs, QA, devops) are hard working, friendly and a joy to work with

Cons

I, along with many of my colleagues found myself being summarily fired without any warning via Zoom. The execution of this was particularly heartless, with our IT access being cut almost immediately, denying us the chance to do any kind of handover, or even to say goodbye to our friends and colleagues. When the current CTO was promoted to the position, the engineering dept quickly deteriorated. Almost immediately, it became obvious that if you were not one of the CTOs ‘favourites’ (limited to people who never voiced a differing opinion to his), you would be treated as a dispensable subordinate and treated as such. After some time, several of my colleagues (mostly experienced managers who had questioned the CTOs behaviour and treatment of the team) began being fired on the spot, despite being valued and respected members of the team. The culture at a management level is toxic and rife with nepotism. They promote people into roles well above their capability because they are generally less expensive and less likely to challenge authority.
