Pros

Remote work and some open source software

Cons

Bad company to work for. Lots of lip service given about work-life balance, but the experience for engineers on the front lines often contradicts this. The workload can be overwhelming, driven by arbitrary deadlines that overshadow their supposed "unlimited" time off policy, which, in reality, rarely extends beyond 2-3 weeks annually, with any additional leave being unpaid. Some engineers have on-call work late at night but nobody ever proactively offers them comp time the following day to rest. You have to ask for it and they hold it against you. Furthermore, monitoring of screen time and notifications during the entire 8-hour workday is enforced, adding an additional layer of stress. You better be staring at your screen for 8 hours straight or you'll get in trouble. Some engineers juggle multiple Agile projects concurrently, resulting in a heavy load due to the numerous Agile meetings, making it difficult to stay on top of tasks. Managers tend to blame employees for slow progress on these tasks, creating additional pressure. An organizational shift from a relatively flat structure to one with more hierarchical layers occurred after my initial joining. Internal promotions to token "Associate Director" positions were granted to individuals with no prior management experience, some of whom struggled as managers. Some scrum masters lack of experience, struggle with basic operation of Jira, and exhibited a tendency to report employees for minor infractions, such as missing a routine meeting for a medical appointment. They fixated on story points without grasping their real meaning and frequently set arbitrary deadlines, placing the blame squarely on employees when those deadlines were exceeded. In a particularly disheartening turn of events, I found myself needing to take medical leave due to a serious health condition. Despite a successful recovery and commendable progress upon my return to work, I was inexplicably terminated shortly thereafter despite my manager claiming that my performance was good. Sometimes they fire people and make them train their replacements. Such a pitiful and cold practice. In light of these issues, I strongly advise against considering employment with this organization, as it appears to be characterized by misleading promises and a lack of transparency.

Pros

Co-workers were great, interesting projects. Remote working with flexible hours, hourly wage, Drupal is a great platform, infrastructure was decent.

Cons

Pay less than equivalent companies due to 'progressive' clients (replace 'progressive' with 'small budgets and unrealistic expectations'), lots of invitations to attend unpaid meetings and do other non-remunerated work, tends towards underwork and overwork - rarely steady hours you can rely on, I didn't work on any while I was there but beware of fixed-rate projects.

Pros

Great coworkers working to make better government sites.

Cons

I saw things there I have never seen at any other company. They are subcontractors for federal government agencies. They say that they are all about a good, inclusive workplace. But if you have a single federal employee that is causing problems, CivicActions mangement will find a scapegoat and push them out of the company as a sort of offering to the feds. If they choose you, then you WILL be thrown under the bus. I saw this more than a few times.
