Good people, bad leadership

Pros

The people. Staff believe in the university mission and care about the students. We do good work and are proud of it. Benefits are good: tuition, free gym, good health insurance coverage (but expensive).

Cons

Staff is undervalued and underpaid, and opportunities for staff advancement are rare; the university would rather hire from outside, and pay more to external candidates than it would to internal ones. Faculty and students rule. Salaries, low to begin with, are not equitable across campus. Health benefit is great but expensive. The university's priorities shift frequently. Trustees tend to overstep and get involved in day-to-day business. Also, the university is top-heavy; lots of captains who are paid well, while lower jobs are held open for extended periods to save money. Compassion is lacking among some senior staff.

Not for true professionals

Pros

Flexibility, autonomy The work/life balance, flexibility, and no micromanaging are some of the good things though.

Cons

Management, heathcare, technology, budget, expertise If you're IT, this is not the place for you, unless you really love the (lean) higher education culture. They like to squeeze the duties of 2 or 3 people into one position (to save money). Many end up being stretched extremely thin, which leads to very slow progress, lower priority items on the back burner, and some falling through the cracks. This also leads to poor management and mentorship & employee deployment that hardly exists. The culture is reactive. They are behind their peers when investing in IT, and only make those investments when an event blows up in their face and costs them money. They're still using the old decentralized model for IT & policy management. This means every department has autonomy to do as they see fit, and policy & administrative controls are very relaxed. This makes policy enforcement very difficult and deficient technical controls. This leads to high risk IT practices, and very difficult training management.
