Pros

It's public service, so the work is rewarding and serving the community is rewarding.

Cons

The culture is toxic. Board of Trustees don't understand what a library is or how it's supposed to work. Administrative staff is so scared of losing their jobs that they won't advocate for the community, staff, or fully explain library services to the Board. Staff are overworked and severely underpaid, undervalued, underappreciated. Those staff members who don't perform well are allowed to continue with no intervention, and competent employees are punished by being required to pick up the slack. Sexual harassment claims are completely ignored. Only reason I'm still here is because we're organizing a union to give some power back to the employees.

Pros

I have a hard time coming up with pros.

Cons

This library is not up to date with the rest of the library profession. Their policies reflect about a thirty year gap, they do not subscribe to the ALA bill of rights or advocate enough for their patrons. The board is not supportive. The atmosphere is far from fun or enjoyable, as everything is micromanaged and scrutinized. There is a lack of trust, flexibility, and support.
