Pros

Strong sense of purpose. The dedication to their mission is admirable. Product is solid and culture is compassionate and pervasive.

Cons

Turnover is high. Leadership is not aligned on vision and inconsistent quarter to quarter. No clear vision of long term success as market adapts to their first mover advantage.

Pros

Benefits for full time employees are good. Co-workers are friendly.

Cons

They are constantly scrambling around back-to-school season to ensure they have enough staffing to support school districts during those busy two months. They rely very heavily on contractors, often requiring those individuals to work 12+ hour days for the duration of BTS (August-September, often stretching into October) to get the job done. The full-time employees are slated with training these contractors on top of their own normal duties. CEO has made public jokes about how they should have a greater proportion of contractors, particularly on the Solutions Team. Middle management is very poor, engendering a lot of resentment among individual contributors. Lots of burnout leading to extremely high rates of turnover. Managers will not hesitate to lie to upper management in order to save their own hide when things are not going well. The company does not have a sustainable plan for the busy season and approach it with the attitude of "keep working until you've finished your work for the day" Lots of 12+ hour days, even for contractors with no benefits. The promotion process is completely opaque and you have to fight HARD to *prove* you deserve the compensation schedule for the next level. They deliberately make it almost impossible to move up. The internal statistics they keep regarding metrics of individual contributors do not follow best data practices. With such an emphasis on metrics, they are not able to collect data accurately enough to gather useful information. Publicly lied about Customer Satisfaction Survey results, which are claimed to be at 100%, though their own data (which has been manipulated) will show otherwise. Where do I stop? This place is toxic. I highly recommend looking elsewhere.

Pros

- superb engineering quality (most engineers are ex-FAANG) - meaningful work on a product that really makes a difference for students - coworkers are very social and it's very easy to make friends

Cons

- comp is much lower than average for SF - engineering department cares about results over people. this is shown by two things: 1. yearly reorgs where engineers have no say in what teams they're placed on 2. work/life balance is good on some teams but awful on others. when i told my manager that i was struggling with WLB, he responds "several engineers at my last company killed themselves. you should be happy that isn't happening here"
