Pros

Learn about distressed investing, particularly the distressed subsidiaries of Fortune 500 companies. The mechanics of a deal are fascinating; ABL, borrowing bass, offer price for a divestment.

Cons

No continuing education, so to speak. Management unwilling to give time to explain things to you or help develop your professional knowledge or skill set. I wanted to learn Italian, to look for deals in Italy by calling Italian companies directly, and CoBe management didn't want to cover the minimal cost; now I guess my mom will have to teach me, or my dad can teach me Greek. One of the two ! There are no opportunities to be promoted. Small company (2 MDs) means this is inevitable. And if you can't be promoted, you can't earn more ! The pay was not real good. $50k base plus bonus of 50 - 100%; which was always at the lower 50% end. Even if we did a deal, or several deals in a year, the Senior MD would not pay you any more. Even basic communication was poor. When the 2 MDs would be on business trips, we wouldn't even know where they were at ! Really bad.

Pros

Get to multi task. But that really means that you get paid to do the jobs of 2 people such as legal and M&A. Which is not really a positive and actually made me mad.

Cons

You are paid poorly and have to do the jobs of 2 people. When involved part of the time in acquiring underperforming divestments I saw the game played with the multinationals that we bought from. We were always looking for was to reduce what we offered and give the seller less and less. Seemed disingenuous to me.

Pros

I worked at CoBe Capital for nearly 5 years, and it is an outstanding place to build a career in Private Equity, as well as learn the ins and outs of the industry – particularly deal origination, M&A and Operations. CoBe is an entrepreneurial, results oriented environment - a company that allows you to work autonomously and encourages new ideas, while having an experienced and thoughtful leadership team to support you along the way. Top performers are well compensated, and given ample opportunities for career growth, including advancements in seniority, exposure to new roles and potential for international assignments. CoBe has carved out a nice niche in acquiring US and European divestitures from Fortune 500 companies - it has been successful by building a tight network across corporations and intermediaries, as well as staying at the forefront of innovative deal sourcing strategies and processes. Given CoBe’s focused approach, it is easy to become efficient and enjoy work / life balance that far exceeds Private Equity norms.

Cons

CoBe is ideal for self-starters – that said, if you’re someone who relies on significant management oversight, then it’s probably not the right environment for you. As you advance at CoBe, you will have the opportunity to participate in M&A and Operations in Europe (mainly Germany, France, Italy, Spain, UK) and across the continental US. For those who prefer not to travel, this may be an issue when you reach the senior management level.
