Pros

The people at Open Phil are a remarkable combination of capable and kind. Whenever I collaborate with other folks on the team, I am reminded of how skilled each person is in their respective roles and also that people genuinely care about our mission. It also feels good to work somewhere that folks genuinely believe in the mission and what we're striving for. Even if folks work on different issue areas, there is a lot of respect for what the other teams are doing. Open Phil also cares a lot about the employee experience - the ops teams are very supportive and our benefits are great. This type of support is pretty unheard of anywhere else.

Cons

It can sometimes feel like there are many small organizations within Open Phil (i.e., that different areas of work are doing their own thing e.g., Farm Animal Welfare is doing something really different than Technical AI Safety) Open Phil is not a racially diverse place. I think the leadership and recruiting teams are paying attention to this and working to develop new pipelines and approaches, which is good, but doesn't negate the current state.

Pros

- thoughtful, intelligent, kind and humble colleagues - getting to do good in the world - great pay and benefits - unique culture that values truth-seeking without sacrificing kindness - ability to carve out a role that suits your talents to the organization's needs (regardless of what you were originally hired for)

Cons

- the work really does feel important, so you have to remember to pace yourself and avoid habits that will lead to burn-out

Pros

Working at Open Phil means that I get to work alongside some of the most intelligent, compassionate and motivated people I’ve ever met, and I’m inspired every day by the collective ambition and kindness of the team. As a member of the operations team, I’m particularly grateful for the fact that the focus of my role doesn’t just consist of achieving a to-do list or making progress on projects but is centered around contributing meaningfully to Open Phil’s mission to have a positive impact on the world’s most pressing issues. The culture values autonomy, encourages curiosity, and fosters a sense of trust among colleagues, and management supports this culture through generous policies, real flexibility and comprehensive benefits.

Cons

The organization is growing pretty quickly, and it can be hard to maintain strong relationships with teams when people are spread out across countries and time zones. Quarterly in-person ‘Togetherness Weeks’, conferences or co-working events, and remote events help bridge this gap. Everyone is driven by a strong sense of purpose, and it can feel quite intense sometimes to see people respond to emails/Slack messages on weekends, when they’re on PTO and out sick. Although it’s not expected for staff to work more than 35-40 focused hours a week, I think Open Phil could be doing a better job of encouraging a healthy work-life balance as an organization.
