Toxic Work Environment

Pros

This used to be a great place to work.

Cons

ZERO work-life balance, you are expected to be on at all times, even on days off. Unrealistic goals and expectations. Management is toxic and does not value employees. Staff are fleeing in record numbers and management just expects that everyone will just do the extra work with no regard for well-being at all. Management blames "great resignation" on the staff turnover and refuses to take a look within and see the real problem - leadership is the issue.

Not for people of color

Pros

Like many highly ranked universities with sizable endowments, you will definitely be pleased with the benefits including health care, subscriptions, educational opportunities etc. Of course it could be better but it’s pretty decent.

Cons

Not the place for people of color or Black people. They lack resources to support mental health. Expect less talented and accomplished colleagues to be promoted above you. Expect to work twice as hard to have half as much. Start saving for therapy after your time working there. HR will not help you but how can they when they are paid to protect the institution? It’s a cold place and I don’t mean just the weather. Ask around before you consider a role here. What’s good for you professionally might not be worth the toll personally.

Salaries too Low

Pros

Great benefits and people to work with.

Cons

Many salaries do not keep up with industry standards. The only way to get a significant pay increase is to threaten to leave at which time you might be given a pay increase. Annual salary increases are meager around 1.5% for top-performers. I generally wouldn't complain, but there's a dichotomy when letters go out stating tuition costs are going up 5% to keep up with cost of living increases, but pay increases for workers are much below that.
