Soulless and inept

Pros

Decent amount of PTO, free parking

Cons

This college makes it clear that you are just a cog in the money machine. Upper administration lacks transparency and makes poor, uninformed, thoughtless, and unethical decisions, and they are not open to new ways of doing things. Poor fiscal management and greed led them to open too many campuses that they can't fill, so they are laying off many, yet they promote people who are vastly unqualified and continue to spend money on things like "all college day," which is basically just an expensive event to give announcements. And if you are faculty or student, be forewarned that they are rapidly moving towards hiring primarily adjunct faculty because they are cheaper, and adjuncts are not treated well. They allow bullies to prosper and micromanage everything, yet never seem to be well organized or on top of things in a productive way. Communication is abysmal. The number of articles about the institution in the media, including the national media, and lawsuits lodged against the administration in just the last 3 years should be enough to suggest that there is corruption at hand. If you want to work somewhere where your knowledge and contributions are truly valued, and where you feel supported and paid well, you really should look elsewhere. It is a soul-sucking place to work.

Pros

good salary, student-centered faculty, emphasis on quality teaching

Cons

The President, a classic workplace bully, demeans faculty by talking behind their back to other faculty and administrators. He has created a climate of fear and distrust and his passion for confrontation has been adopted by upper administration. Decisions are made that affect the faculty without faculty input and certain "bad cops" are used to intimidate those who speak out against the administration. He makes arbitrary decisions that favor his "pets" and he punishes those who don't play politics (he'll allow a favorite to attend an international conference but won't allow someone else to attend because of the "no international travel" policy - even if both faculty members have been accepted to present original research). The President has created a hostile work environment that is toxic.

Pros

Under the current President there are no pros. It use to be a satisfying work environment where hard work received recognition. Dr. Cary Israel put Collin College in the national spot lot and practiced shared governance whenever possible.

Cons

Finally had enough and resigned last year. Current President Dr. Matkin is an egotistical and arrogant person. Could care less about faculty and staff. He makes fun of people in front of an entire room and thinks it is funny. He spends more time at car dealerships than his office. He has made such a top-heavy organization with too many VP titles without hiring essential workers actually teaching students. This college is headed towards baccalaureate programs and head to 20 years backward steps with more vocational programs then academic programs. He destroyed the reputation of San Jacinto community college and is doing the same thing at Collin. Did not take Covid seriously, as a result many people have died. Any faculty expressing free speech and academic freedom. Matkin tries to say faculty not fires their contracts were just not renewed, but is unable to say why because each faculty had an impeccable evaluation every year previously. On a sidenote, you can hardly understand what he is saying when he is speaking, and whenever he is speaking is lying.
