Not all that glitters is gold

Pros

The stated mission is very engaging and truly one of a kind. There are pockets of supportive teams unevenly distributed throughout the company. These groups have a groove working for them and are making incredible strides both scientifically and culturally within the company.

Cons

There is a level of competition - particularly between species teams - that is counterproductive and seems to sprout from upper management. This leads to an uneven culture across sites and teams as well as tension over project direction. There is an air of forced politeness lacquered in hype that stifles the necessary conflict to resolve the aforementioned issues. The company also struggles on occasion with a truly inclusive culture between snide comments and dismal of voiced concerns (culturally and technically). Think twice if you're not a tech bro.

Not so Colossal....

Pros

Lots of interesting science, and some very bright minds.

Cons

It's weird and chaotic. They randomly lay people off with no reason given. More than half the men who work there are openly gay, so they are clearly violating EEOC guidelines. Their PR team works hard to make them appear like a juggernaut. They truly do not know what they are doing. Genotype doesn't necessarily equal phenotype. They are rushing headlong into getting a species out, consequences be damned. They will kill a lot of embryos that aren't what they intended. They will have to, and that, like their hiring practices, will come under scrutiny.

Pros

Benefit package: 5/5- Benefits are amazing, currently unlimited PTO, pay for medial and dental 100%, salary is on par with industry standard. Personal Fulfillment: 4/5- Feels amazing to work in an industry geared towards species restoration, the science is cutting edge, although at times feels like hitting roadblocks with management. Company Culture: 4/5- Great atmosphere and co-workers are the best to be around. Career Opportunities: 3/5- Most of Colossal is new and understandably have not had the time to advance in career yet, but I am hopeful that as the company grows HR will prefer to promote existing employees to new/higher roles instead of hiring externally to fill those new roles.

Cons

Management: 2/5- Too many managers, not enough employees to run experiments. Wholly depends on what team you are on, but some teams are unorganized and managers will ask to run experiments which are not fully thought out. Management seems scatter-brained at times and changes direction from minute to minute. Work/Life Balance: 2/5- It is nice to have unlimited PTO, however its hard to find time to take off. Some employees feels compelled to not take PTO in fear of letting down their projects and for the cell biologists they are working 24/7 and find it difficult to find someone to take care of cells when they are out. Using personal phone for work :1/5- Would like to have a work phone separate from personal because it is hard at times to disconnect when all your work emails, text messages, and chats are on your personal phone. Sometimes too in the lab there is a need to take photos for documentation and I would rather not have to deal with the liability of having proprietary information on my personal phone.

Thank you for your review! This is valuable feedback and we are discussing this internally to see where we can continue to make improvements. As everyone learned at the off-site, we do have more career ladder and performance management process being implemented soon which will help with clarity regarding internal opportunities for advancement. Even though we are a young company, there have been several internal promotions already and more will follow. We do encourage employees to talk to their managers about their career goals to make sure you are on the same page with desired career path and what's needed to get to the next step. Also, IT is already working on a solution for mobile devices. Regarding PTO - it is there for everyone to use and we encourage everyone to take some time off. Please work with your manager to arrange for coverage when you take PTO. You would also be welcomed and encouraged to come directly to us in HR to share concerns so that we can help address any concerns before they get more worrisome.
