Great mission undermined by white supremacy culture

Pros

Excellent mission focused on building power for low-income people, especially low-income people of color. One of the few national intermediary organizations that focuses on community organizing strategies. Really talented and passionate staff at every level of the organization. Well funded. There have been internal efforts at organizational change for a number of years. Staff union formed to improve alignment between stated mission/values and actual operations.

Cons

Management models many of the characteristics of elitism and white supremacy culture as identified in Dismantling Racism: A Workbook for Social Change Groups such as a constant sense of urgency, paternalism, opaque and undemocratic decision making, power hoarding, excessive use of memos and devaluing other ways of thinking and developing strategy. More of a commitment to maintaining the institution's standing than to using its resources to meaningfully support social justice and liberation movements. Clear pattern of promoting and supporting white staff, less flexibility and support for equally qualified staff from marginalized backgrounds.

Troubling dominant culture

Pros

Good mission. Dedicated and passionate staff.

Cons

High turnover. A lot of lip service is given to organizational values, but cultural norms are deeply engrained and behavior does not align with values. Operates in a perpetual sense of urgency. Loyalty is rewarded and discomfort is not welcomed.

Some Potential, but Overall a Disappointing Start

Pros

Great exposure to operating in social justice on a national scale. Wonderful opportunity to learn new things. Passionate folks with lots of experience.

Cons

Onboarding needs to include working with team that you're entering. It was just a week of meeting with no tangible connection to the work I would actually end up doing. New Employee Orientation is happening over 90 days after I started, after my 90 day review. That needs to happen way faster. Being new at Community Change is challenging to navigate. It a dynamic org with lots of moving parts and various sub cultures. That can make it VERY challenging to get things done, and the lack of responsiveness without accountability is WILD. Staff should keep in mind that everyone won't adapt to the specific culture here with ease. Very meeting heavy culture. Make it's hard to get work done. Accountability accumulates around one person/role without being shared fairly. Example: Someone hands in a document late and they get dinged for it, even though several other people who needed to provide input were themselves late. If you're introverted or have sensory, neurological issues, I'd not recommend you work here. You're expected to be social in ways that may prove challenging and it will reflect poorly on you if you aren't. There's open office spaces with few places to stow away if you need quiet to get work done. The hiring process tends to be long, winding, and unfair.
