The Truth about Consolidus

Pros

Casual office environment, flexible work hours, some nice team members.

Cons

I thought it was important to provide an honest assessment of Consolidus, as most of the reviews on Glass Door do not accurately represent the corporate culture. Employees and interns are strongly encouraged to leave positive reviews so the company can attract talent, as turnover is very high. Consolidus is okay if you are an intern or just out of college. For senior professionals with experience and knowledge, this is not the place for you. Expect smoke and mirrors during the interview process, where the owner insists you will have complete autonomy. Unfortunately, that couldn’t be further from the truth. You will be expected to make suggestions, but none of them will ever be implemented, and then you will get in trouble for not making an impact. It’s a lose-lose situation. The company also touts its “best practice” approach, but the fact of the matter is, the entire infrastructure is held together by duct tape. Consolidus has been growing top-line revenue, but not at the pace they should be, considering they’ve been in business for over 10 years. The rumor is that the bottom line numbers aren't as good as the leadership would like everyone to believe. The owner just loves to hear himself talk (and talk and talk and talk) about how great Consolidus is, his vision for the future, etc., keeping you in meetings for hours. Methinks doth protest too much. Finally, it is pretty appalling that they don't pay employees for national holidays if they haven't been with the company for three months. I’m not talking PTO, but holidays like Memorial Day, Christmas and Thanksgiving! What a penny wise/pound foolish way to tell your employees you don't really value them! Salaries are also pretty low (and are NOT reflective of the salaries posted in their job ads), which shouldn’t be surprise after I just explained the holiday pay policy. Again, if you’re a professional hoping to be part of a growing company and to advance your career, look elsewhere; your hands will be tied. There’s a reason Consolidus is always hiring.

This might be one of the more valuable posts to our Glassdoor profile. It gives us an excellent opportunity to provide further insight into our company with specific details that would have otherwise been missing from our profile. So, please take a few minutes and review the following. The person who posted this review certainly provides an interesting perspective. This person claims to know the "truth" of Consolidus when it is merely their opinion and one based off of very limited knowledge and time with our company (2-3 months). For the sake of adding clarity to the conversation, here is some information regarding points that were made: 1. First and foremost, we have never asked anyone to post a review contrary to their actual experience with our company. It is true that we have asked people to post reviews so others would gain insight into our company, most often when they have volunteered how positive their experience was with our company, and our response is, 'That's great. Do you mind posting that to our Glassdoor profile". 2. We have had high turnover, but we also have very good longevity. Our rate of hiring is increasing and we do our best to ensure it will be a good mutual fit, but finding capable committed professionals who are eager and motivated to commit at a high level and achieve success has not been easy. We suspect anyone who has been in hiring positions understands this challenge. 3. A number of other comments are just attempts to discredit our company, including the company "being held together by duct tape". Fortunately one person's opinion does not overshadow years of continual growth, our outstanding reputation in our industry, our A+ credit rating, our A+ BBB rating, our multiple awards for being fastest growing in our industry and in the nation and our long list of highly creditable customers who have been with us for years. We have had 20-25% growth every year for the each of the past 5 years. We have achieved this growth with having never taken on debt and maintaining an A+ credit rating. We appreciate this person's belief that we should be growing faster and we feel that way also. 4. it is our objective to hire people who do not need managed. Initially there is close collaboration to acclimate the new hire into their position and our team. We can appreciate how that can feel like micromanagement. 5. It is true that we do not offer PTO within the first 90 days, but we offer generous amounts beyond that. We understand that may not suit some people. We do offer healthy compensation plans including considerable salaries with performance bonus opportunities. This has resulted in an average annual increase in wages of over 16% per year, which is 4 times the national average. 6. The owners does talk a lot about his passion for the company and vision for the future. This is most often perceived as a positive for people who want to work someplace where there is passionate leadership with a compelling vision of the future, and where that "vision" has been continually actualized over the previous 10 years. There are a lot of people giving their opinions out there these days. Consolidus will stay committed to doing the hard work of actually continuing to creating positive change.

Potential ruined by management

Pros

* Many of the people on staff are awesome and fun to be with. * Good Akron location. * Good starting experience for people wanting to get their feet wet.

Cons

If you want to know the cons, look at the older negative reviews. Unfortunately, even those from five years ago still relevant. And sadly, that sums up the situation. The same problems keep coming up, management will snub some employees and play favorites with others, and in general you'll find yourself in an increasingly toxic environment. On top of this, if you bring this up to management, you'll get gas lighted or find that they generally treat people issues like process issues. But don't take my word for it: as you can see for yourself on this page, the CEO will often respond to negative Glassdoor reviews and try to twist things into a positive light. I don't think he realizes this only proves to others that Consolidus isn't really interested in making things better, or learning from their mistakes. This place has a really high turnover rate. Management says it's because people aren't a "good fit" - but all you need to do is talk to former employees to see that it's not them who are the issue. And that's really sad, because this place has a lot of potential.

We are sorry that you feel this way but appreciate your ability to express your opinion. The unfortunate thing about services like glassdoor is that they are most often used by disapproving former staff (yes, we have had some over the past 10+ years) to express their views while the majority of the staff doesn't take the time to share their positive experience or views of the company. For example, just over the past week, this is some of the unsolicited feedback from our staff, and each from a different staff member, "Thanks for fostering an atmosphere of encouragement and development. Love seeing all the growth!", "I’m really excited about every advancement we’re making and the vision you have for Consolidus. I feel very fortunate to be a part of it thus far. " (a 3 year staff member), "I love my job." (a 7 year staff member), "This is a great team here and I am amazed at all of the positive growth" (former employee who returned to Consolidus), "I want to do back flips out of here." (new staff member) Again, that was just feedback from the past week. We have also been recognized as a Top Workplace in Ohio and our industry, based on staff surveys and input. Regarding turnover, the average (and median) tenure for our staff, not including new hires this year, is over 6 years, ranging from multiple staff over 10 years and a number of staff at 2-3 years. According to the National Bureau of Labor, the national average is 4.1 years. The statement about "the potential being ruined by management" is just this person's opinion. Our management team has navigated the company from $50 in the checking account (15 years ago), a recession, and a pandemic to over $10M in annual sales and growing, including the following growth recognition received this year: Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Private Company in the US - 5 years running (only 1 out of 3 companies that make the list one time make it a second time), Top 20 Fastest Growing Company in a $26B/year industry (out of 25,000), a Weatherhead 100 Fastest Growing NEO Company - 3 years running, Cascade Capital Fastest Growing Company, and an Inner City 100 Fastest Growing Company, in addition to being in the top 4% of our industry for annual sales volume. Most of all, we have years of customer history with top quality organizations, including the recent addition of a contract estimated to be $7M+ annually. This is pretty good evidence to refute that the "potential is ruined by management". We do feel that we are far from realizing the full potential which is the work we are doing now as we set out on our 10X growth plan. Lastly, Consolidus is in a constant state of growth and development and one of the highest priorities is continuing to be a top-quality workplace that empowers and elevates our staff. Just this year alone, we have promoted our Director of Operations and hired a Director of Sales, a Director of Marketing, a new CFO, and an HR Manager. Each of those positions are designed to support and elevate our staff. All of that being said, we have plenty of room for improvement, but we appreciate the positive company performance that indicates we are doing many of the right things. Unfortunately, there will always be the opinions of a select few that would like to suggest otherwise. We do appreciate the added motivation provided by this poster. One of the things we enjoy most is disproving the critics and doubters.

We appreciate that all feedback gives us an opportunity to consider ways that we can become a better company. We also recognize that in all of our teambuilding that there are and will continue to be instances where we aren't a good mutual fit. We are excited to have a team of high caliber professionals who are excited to be a part of a progressive and successful company and we are committed to continuing to give them reasons to feel that way. We certainly wish this individual the best and hope they are able to find an opportunity that is better suited to them. Meantime, we expect to continue to set "unrealistic" goals and expectations, which seems to be working really well for us. To help balance the conversation regarding the "lack of leadership", the performance of the company would suggest otherwise. In addition to being in the top 3% for annual sales volume in our industry and recognized as Top 10 Fastest Growing Company (out of 25,000 nationally), Consolidus is a 5-time Fastest Growing Company in America (according to Inc. Magazine), a multiple time recipient of the Weatherhead 100 Fastest Growing Companies, a Smart Culture Company (according to Smart Business Magazine), and a "Top Workplace" in Ohio (according to Ohio Business Magazine) and our industry (according to our industry association, ASI). Over the past year, while the pandemic reduced our industry by over 20% and reduced our top accounts by over 50%, the company grew 47%, had no pandemic related layoffs or reduction in staff, and increased our community outreach and support by over 385%. We have an incredible team that makes this possible, but we also expect there is a leadership influence there as well.
