Unfortunately the boss is a total joke. Everyone inside the firm knows this, and increasingly word has gotten out to the outside world. To the extent past performance has been adequate, it has been solely due to good luck and the hiring of good analysts, but the boss' portfolio management skills are non-existent. The firm will never excel since the boss cannot get out of his own way given an ego that supersedes all rational decisions. The office environment is completely toxic, with smart people beaten into quiet submission for constant fear of losing their jobs.
