Lack of Leadership

Pros

There are two reasons to work for DM Petroleum. First, the people are great, talented, and concerned and second there is a steady paycheck

Cons

The company has only one customer, the U.S. Department of Energy. The only business is to manage and operate the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The company makes a profit by achieving “defined” performance targets, which is good; and by keeping the federal government happy, which is based on the subjective emotions of the federal leadership. The problem is the federal government leadership lacks any leadership or business skills or capabilities and has chosen not to listen, lean, and improve. Over 20 years DM Petroleum staff has identified best practices and benchmarks to ensure that value was created for the taxpayer who ultimately fund's the project. Sadly, the inept federal government leadership routinely rejected comparisons to industry, other government organizations, and recommendation for improvement. Instead of developing “strategy” and a “vision” for the future, the federal government leadership function as ego driven overlords who dictate their desires to contractors who then must respond as good subjects so at the end of the year the company is rewarded with a profit for keeping the royalty happy! For all practical purposes, the leadership of DM Petroleum is nonexistent and only serve as order takers, which they expertly execute, right or wrong, without any consideration of the workers. Sadly, the culture created by these overloads over the years has created a very depressing, toxic environment based on fear. In general there is little to no development of the workforce or future for career development.
