Pros

Few people in Product seemed nice, had experience working in tech. Some very talented engineers. Free Zoom Wednesdays. Quick action on Covid and generally working was flexible.

Cons

Too many ‘Managers’, not enough Doers.
Executives having no vision, no idea on what were they doing, no goals, no plans for monetisation. The main goal was to build something ‘fashiony’ which couldn’t be translated as a real metric.
CEO previously worked in fashion and hired Art Directors working closely with Product which couldn’t understand how building an app is different than designing a magazine and mostly waterfalling Product with work not delivered on time or simply because their work was impossible to translate in UI. It was very difficult to feedback to the them as the answers were “You don’t understand fashion, you are not creative”
Toxic culture, as CEO slowly surrounded with people who couldn’t say “No’ to her, and talented people either left the company, or have been sacked for ‘various’ reasons. Some believed had power into bully others around as most of the time inexperienced ones believe they need to compensate somehow for their lack of knowledge.

Lots and lots and lots of meetings around, with no purpose, no agenda, especially in Product. Everything was changing overnight, in 2 to 3 months stakeholders changed direction so many times you could hardly tell what you’ll do tomorrow. Teams were jumping from one project to another on weekly basis, it was hard to achieve that “team knowledge”.
The biggest challenges for UX Designers were things such as ‘Add glitter’ and ‘Shine’ and ‘Jumpy Buttons’ which suddenly become the only way to achieve great ‘conversion rates’. It was decided that 4-5 weekly reviews for Designers is the way to do things - where everybody had a saying in how to design except designers and the scrambled general feedback was then dictated by the CPO which also had a very “thorough” and “detailed” vision of how things should work, look and feel.
CPO also line-managed the Design Team as the Head of Design was sacked for not delivering some icons(?). In fact she managed the Design Team for 5 months so well - that at the end of these 5 months literally all designers either left or have been sacked for not being able to cope with her fruitful demands. Typical 121s were “I’ll show up 15 mins late and tell you what I want you do do - you’ll just listen and agree”

Drest was by far the worst experience I’ve ever been through, a circus.

Pros

Interesting assets Good connections in the fashion industry Quick introduction of remote working during pandemic

Cons

Failure of senior management to understand basic concepts around tech results in repeated and predictable failures. Lack of faith from senior management and continuous micromanagement produces an unhealthy working environment and bad product that struggles to find a market fit. Questionable HR practices, regularly treating both contractors and permanent employees as resources that can be replaced on a whim.

Pros

All of the people, certainly on the technical side of the company (Product/Engineering/Design) are really friendly and want to grow this business. They've worked in the technology or gaming industry before and are really knowledgable and happy to help with anything. The personal growth opportunities are good, there's a high level of independence so you can find yourself diving into projects you have no knowledge on and learning as you go. CTO is an extremely nice guy, great vision and technical knowledge. Management style is relaxed but everybody is down for the grind and gets the job done. It's nice to have a calm head in the management/executive team. Company was fast to act with Covid and was prepared for remote working and overall, the flexbility was good.

Cons

Operations team at an executive level have not worked in real tech before and lack a a lot of understanding. A senior executive from the technology industry is needed here to take the reigns from an operational standpoint. Environment of micromanaging outside of tech teams. Lots of meetings for no real reason, sometimes they existed to micromanage and sometimes they were there for managers to feel like they were doing something constructive. Extremely difficult to be promoted with a spaghetti organisational structure. Little to no praise from management for a job well done unless you part of the "inner circle". Path to profitability is very much unclear.

Hello, Thank you so much for writing this review we appreciate it. I am pleased to read that your experiences were generally good and you felt the team were friendly and knowledgeable. This is particularly important to us that the talent we have in the business can share their industry experience and help solve problems together. I am sorry to read that you felt there is a lack of progression and feedback from management. This is something we know we need to work on. We have hired at pace, certainly in 2020, but we are looking at ways to ensure everyone is valued and progression and feedback are certainly part of that. You also mentioned the need for a new strategy, we did take some time to review in December 2020 and in January launched our new strategy for 2021 which will focus the teams and drive everyone in the direction that we need to take so that the game is optimised for success. Part of that is really putting users and their experiences at the forefront of our game design. Finally, DREST is a start-up as you mentioned, which means we will have some learning and growing pains as we continue to push ourselves. That also means that due to the pace of change and creativity there will be inefficiencies that are created but we are working on improving those along with our organisation design and structure. We are trying to be more iterative with everything that we do. Thank you again for your review. I would really appreciate the opportunity to discuss your feedback with you in more detail if you are willing. My email address is: abby.matthews@drest.com Thanks, Abby
