Pros

Gorgeous place with internationally acclaimed status; looks good on resume; everyone works VERY hard and wears many hats. Staff does an incredible job on a miniscule budget and absolute minimum # of employees.

Cons

Upper management values volunteers more than employees; regularly dictates last-minute orders, changes priorities, creating unnecessary confusion, chaos and competition among departments. Job duties increase but pay does not. Recent mass exodus of key staff. Expected to be on call 24/7. No work/life balance and discourages employees from taking to take "generous" vacation as it interferes with "business needs"

A Toxic Work Environment for Everyone

Pros

The gardens are truly beautiful and it's a good place to learn new skills.

Cons

Upper management is toxic and hostile. The amount of turnover is very high due to a lack of organization or appreciation for workers. There is no room to advance and the pay is inadequate.

Toxic work environment

Pros

The non-management staff is able to bond together, become friends & work hard in spite of unfortunate working conditions. Great group of hard workers & genuine people.

Cons

Incredible incompetence shown by management in horticulture department in addition to extreme rudeness and bullying. If you show that you are capable & intelligent, you can be sure there is a target on your back to run you off as soon as possible. When reporting issues to HR, there is clearly no concern or repercussions. Notes are not even taken in meetings & concerns are quickly trickled down the pipeline as gossip, creating an even worse working environment. Frightening how a bunch of mid to upper aged females still act like they are in junior high. If you are a 'yes' person with no self respect or goals in life, you will succeed here. Otherwise, it may take years to find your former personality and undo the damage inflicted after you quit.
