Pros

Rico - he's awesome!

Cons

The culture at Darby is abrasive, aggressive, and thankless. - CEO has NO problem whatsoever with calling out employees in front of the whole office (which is typically dead silent - no music playing/ no one ever talks). - The CEO's anger/ stress and impossible goals trickles down and makes everyone feel on edge at all times. - Cooperation and Teamwork is NOT a thing here. A few super feisty attitudes in a very small office does have a big impact.... - Scare tactics are used within the first week. - Turnover like crazy. - The pay was decent but it wasn't worth the bad atmosphere. At a startup you should expect to work a lot and have little work life balance which is usually okay if you're somewhere that has a good culture. - Happy hours on Thursday consist of one person making drinks for the whole office, having 1 drink during the meeting then everyone leaving as soon as it's over. All positive reviews are from current employees who are trying to make the company sound attractive because they are desperately trying to hire.

CEO Anger Problems, CTO Spineless

Pros

Employees are very talented and smart. Everyone treats each other with respect and shares a common vision.

Cons

Office is dark and dungeness. Specifically, it is located on the corner of a SOMA ally with a lot of drug activity and trash. I personally saw many needles on the ground near the entrance and people actively using just a few doors down. The CEO and CTO are both smart people but CEO is power-hungry and lacks professional grace when angry. On several occasions, she has screamed at her employees from across the *very quiet* office.

Darby Smart Response

Thank you for taking the time to share your views. We're glad you have met talented and smart people here at Darby Smart. We have worked hard to recruit and retain unique and intelligent thinkers as our team has grown and it's great to hear that you experienced that as part of the team. We appreciate that you are addressing/sharing your concerns and take your feedback seriously. Scrappiness is one of our cultural values and through that we haven't invested heavily in our office and have chosen a less trendy location. That said, we recently conducted a team survey and one of the things our team wants most is an office re-vamp. In true Darby Smart style, we are DIYing our office this month to update it and make it a collaborative and inspiring environment to work in. As you mentioned, we are located in SOMA. As a result there are things that happen in the neighborhood beyond our immediate control. We encourage and support our team to take time to invest in improving our neighborhood and make an impact outside of our four walls. On concerns about leadership, our CEO & CTO (co-founders) are committed to our mission of inspiring creativity, both for users and for our team. They are both passionate individuals who have continued to grow and develop, just as each individual has on our team. If you haven't felt that way, I encourage you talk to any leader to voice your concerns so that they can be addressed head on. More broadly, we encourage every team member to respectfully challenge each other. However, screaming is never appropriate and we do not condone or support that behavior from any team member, including the CEO. We agree with you and certainly believe that success comes through a collaborative team delivering a great experience to our users. We've been intensely focused on shifting how we work to nurture collaboration and leverage team members' individual strengths. Darby Smart has not been successful with all hiring decisions. Unfortunately this has led to a mismatch of expectations, such as performance, role, culture, etc. and we see this as an opportunity to continually improve our hiring process.

Pros

Everyone who works here is incredibly smart and dedicated to their jobs and the company mission. There are endless opportunities to learn new skills. Since it's such a small environment, everybody's work has a direct impact on the company's goals. Free lunches twice a week are also a nice perk.

Cons

Like any startup, the pace and variety of work can be challenging. Balancing priorities requires communication and self direction, as well well as a willingness to roll up your sleeves to do things that might be new to you.
