Great school, but with enough bad apples to potentially spoil the barrel

Pros

The students are amazing, the majority of the faculty are collaborative and open to new ideas, and the values in the mission statement are worth fighting for. The retirement benefits are fairly generous, and perks like having access to gyms, fields, and the lake campus are nice. Everyone does know everyone, and for the most part that's a positive thing - there's a real community spirit here.

Cons

The first thing you'll hear from anyone is the pay. Salaries are far below market rate, and the Davidson area is no longer cheap to live in. The school will continue to lose excellent folks due to the low salaries and lack of opportunity to advance within the organization. While there are many excellent folks in departments and in administration, there are also several completely toxic units/departments. No strategic thinking is done in these dysfunctional departments. HR is not good at understanding violations of employees rights.

Pros

Friendly employee culture. Staff are genuinely concerned for one another and we get to work with awesome students. Campus is beautiful, and we have access to amenities like free gyms and the lake campus. Retirement benefits are competitive. The college puts 10% of your salary into retirement if you put in 1%, and you're vested after 3 years. The college has a strong history of allowing staff to move to new positions in other departments/offices, and phased retirement is a regular practice here. The college also helps pay for your kids' college educations if you've been here a certain number of years.

Cons

When people leave Davidson, they leave Davidson for financial reasons. The salaries are not competitive, and medical benefits are meh and prices are rising. The college recently began a new yearly budgeting process that requires every department to shave off 7% of its annual budget to be "reallocated." The process is even less transparent than it was before, and employees are generally displeased as it appears that the reallocations go to pet projects. Staff are legendarily regarded as second-class compared to faculty, and unfortunately there are many situations in which this is made painfully clear to staff.

Pros

-The students are absolutely wonderful. For the most part, they are smart, kind, and eager to learn. -Funding is available for travel to conferences, etc., but is limited for visiting faculty (even if they say it isn't, which they will in your interview / when hiring).

Cons

-The motto here forever has been "hire visiting faculty, get them hired elsewhere on a tenure track." Unless you have a wealthy donor family member or a spouse at the college, you will not be hired long-term from a VAP position period. -The admin is known to belittle and ignore the needs of staff members, and there is a stark and consistently reified / supported separation between staff and faculty (which serves the college). -Pay here is not great, especially when compared to peer institutions. Tenure-track faculty have no idea how little their VAP colleagues make.
