Depressing. No future prospects for employees.

Pros

No stress. You could get away without doing any work.

Cons

Taken from the company's communication to employees after pay award offer announced. "It is ultimately your choice on how you choose to engage with the opportunity that DE&S as your employer provides to you. The most attainable route to significant increases in reward (and therefore potentially increasing or maintaining how you manage your own standard of living) within DE&S, is through promotion and/or consistent exceptional performance. The consequence of this means if you are 'expecting' DE&S to maintain or even improve your standard of living for you, whilst you stay in your existing role/grade and successfully performing year in-year out, and the impact solely of annual pay award resolving your ability to maintain or improve your standard of living, then that is an unrealistic expectation and not what the annual pay award is design to achieve."

Pros

Great people. Good training opportunities Interesting work

Cons

Lies about pay. The 'freedoms to set pay' allow them to offer under MOD main and to disengage from meaningful negotiations. 1.25% for most over two years following the pay freeze in July 2020. No recognition of years at level. If you want to be rewarded for your efforts, have access to meaningful progression, but still want to support Defence, go and work for the MOD. They are at least offering a moderately better pay rise.

Incompetance ruins a potentially wonderful place

Pros

Flexi, funding for courses and upskilling and even the office isn't completely awful despite being ripped off at every place that sells anything.

Cons

My work life is spent being blamed for my manager's incompetence. They will regularly come into my meetings uninvited and completely derail good conversations and argue with parties that I have struggled to get around a table in the first place due to apprehension due to previous incidents like these. It seems that periodically, people who are underperforming will be shuffled into areas where their potential for damage is deemed less or promoted out of their roles. One of my colleagues was told during their annual performance review that they are not expected to attain even a mid-level score next reporting year given their current output which was enough to achieve that solidly in the current year (seems pretty arbitrary and an awful motivator if intended that way). Presenteeism culture, in 2021/22 we were informed that due to the success of wfh during lockdown it would be kept on and we would not have mandated office time or wfh time. This caused many of my colleagues to move further from Bristol to save money and improve their quality of life, this was reversed 2 years or so later and now we are told that we are underperforming because we don't go in the 2/3/4/5 days a week that someone decided without any consideration.
