An assistant professor becomes an associate professor when they achieve tenure, which is usually five to seven years into employment with a demonstration of exceptional teaching or research skills.

Toxic, hostile environment from the top down, with excessive micromanagement. No room for advancement. Backstabbing and lying are normal. Horrible place to work with massive turnover and everyone always on eggshells. Public punishment in front of peers to humiliate "violator". No room for critical thinking skills since management is threatened by individual ideas and suggestions.
