Pros

Fellow co--workers, on the most part, are the best - they are intelligent, capable people! Store locations and office locations are great.

Cons

Low pay. Employees are taken for granted. Executive leadership does not allow for out-of-the-box thinking (you must do it their way) - very narcissistic. Work overload - and work inequality in some departments. Poor management by some department directors who focus much time on personal business and not on department issues. Promotions granted to those in the "in club." Others are managed by fear. Morale is horrible and HR motivators are child-like. Overall company management is old school and not in line with contemporary management models. Seldom is anyone complimented for a job well done.

Pros

Steady pay, if you work hard you'll find you get all the hours you need.

Cons

They are losing market share, small minded corporate management. They do not value education. Top executives (now a category manager) used to talk nothing but bad things about the company even while being a store director. He would even brag about how stupid the top executives were for buying his bull.

Great part-time, awful full-time.

Pros

-As a part-timer, they're great with schedules. -Great coworkers for the most part. -Store core management are generally a pleasure to work with. -Real clean workplace. Well-kept. -Union break schedule. -Very good advancement opportunities once you get to full-time. You've gotta be in the club and willing to kiss-up, though. That gets you in the club, which is essential to being promoted. It's truly NOT based on merit. -Set pay increases. But they are per the union contract, so it's number of hours, not merit. -Higher class of customer and coworker than say a Walmart/Shop n' Save, Schnucks.

Cons

-They run the business aspect of things from corporate without knowing what's happening in your particular store. Like they'll order 5+ pallets of product for a given department (grocery/frozen/dairy/liquor/etc.) without coming to the store to look at your back room or talking to the department manager. They rely on the computer system movement, which reflects NONE of your back stock or backroom situation. Former department manager rant, sorry. -The bigwigs don't give a hoot about ANYONE below assistant store manager. -Retail is retail: weekend/night/holiday hours. -Morale is AWFUL at a lot of stores. It's heavily dependent on your store director and how they choose to implement corporate's guidelines. -They're cutting hours wherever possible to make the books look as good as possible. Maybe to sell? Greg and Laura never wanted the business and their grandma (who was the sweetest lady and incredibly proud pf her family business passed, so... -They try to run the business and claim the environment of a small, family owned local business, but it's simply not the case when you do that much revenue and have that many locations. -Some customers can be a pain, especially in the high income areas. -The HR department at corporate is mostly terrible. Especially in development of promising employees. Their CDC (career development center) training is archaic and uninformative if you know ANYTHING about business and sociology/psychology.
