Pros

Great benefits, flexibility depending on which department you work in, tuition benefits, job security, chances to transfer to other positions

Cons

employees are not paid what they are worth; combining too many jobs into one; staff know they are not valued and are viewed as easily replaceable and for cheaper; low morale; often have to leave your department to receive a promotion; because of the hierarchical management structure, those who can implement changes have no idea how bad it really is for staff because those that report to them are not reporting the truth; positions need to be reclassified because a lot of people are listed as staff assistants when they should at least be admin assistants

Just be an average employee

Pros

Health, dental, pension, 403(b), all the things. They give a small stipend for your child to go to any private college in the US.

Cons

If you are an excellent employee, you will be given the work of 2 people. It's called "getting Duked". If you're average to below average, you will be given a normal level of work. The raises are insulting considering how much money that place makes. A great employee makes 1% of a higher raise than an average employee. It's just not worth it. It's very hard/impossible to raise through the ranks unless your boss favors you and only you. You must apply for a new job within Duke. A lot of your work/life balance depends on your department and your manager(s). People have been fleeing recently for much higher paying jobs.
