Pros

Dunn Carney has great benefits and compensation for the Portland metro area. They have a strong local presence, give back to the community and have a central location. They take quality of work here very seriously, and you are held to a consistently high standard. They have a lot of internal resources that make your job easier to allow for productivity. They hold frequent company health/commroderie initiatives, have an employee assistance program, and provide relevant continued education meetings. The office is brighter, more positive, and inherently more welcoming than other firms in the area.

Cons

General office gossip is prevelant here. At this firm, the location of your office space is very important in determining how much of it you are exposed to. Focusing on your work and wearing headphones helps a lot, too. Part of their pro is their con to some people: you simply can't be successful here professionally or socially if you prefer taking the easy road, or are comfortable cutting corners. Diversity doesn't seem to be a priority in their hiring process, but Portland also severely lacks it as a whole. Hierarchy is a tender subject here; not everyone is necessarily equal, but if you work hard, you will earn respect quickly and be supported in improving quality of your work.

Pros

Some fun attorneys. Good benefits.

Cons

Horrible management. I was singled out by several other secretaries simply because I got along well with my attorney. Constant harassment and emailing between a small group of petty secretaries who seemed like they were still in high school - one now works at Smith Freed and still is doing the same thing. My boss asked management to intervene and when I was called in I was told "to get a thicker skin." So if you are in the "it" group, you will do fine, otherwise don't bother.
