Pros

Colleagues are generally exceptionally smart, motivated, and happy to be here - Really smart people to learn from (people largely come to Earnest from top companies in finance and tech) - It says a lot that the company has such low turnover (many people have stayed here for 4+ years when many top tech companies struggle to retain employees past 2 years) - As company scales up, teams naturally are becoming more siloed (which is good because it makes communication and management more efficient) but there is no tribalism, and it is easy to work and communicate with people on other teams - The culture is very genuine, and people are not expected to fit into any kind of mold The growth opportunities of a startup combined with the friendly management practices of a large tech company - Excellent pay, benefits, hours, unlimited vacation - Incredible managers and top leadership and radical transparency from both (e.g. regular companywide meetings) - If you want to grow into a new skillset that Earnest needs, your manager will support you and connect you with colleagues who can help - If you have a great idea for a new product or internal tool, you are encouraged to champion it and build it, regardless of your level of seniority Incredibly interesting data and product - Earnest has been refining its product for 7 years, and has benefitted immensely from keeping its scope focused - Great internal tools and ETL that are always getting better thanks to talented engineers (enables data analysts focus on what matters instead of repetitive, uninteresting work) - Exposure to a range of industries depending on your interests

Cons

Still growing, and refining product-market fit - The flip side of being a young company where everyone has opportunities to meaningfully contribute to the product is that you need to understand the big picture and how your work fits into it (your managers can help, but it's still important to think strategically) - There will be dead ends and false starts (there are so many valuable projects that some will inevitably get lost in the mix)

Pros

* They are trying to use the right technologies * Pay is decent * Remote-friendly

Cons

* Lots of turnover * People cut with seemingly short (or no) notice * Unclear whether they hire several engineers with the intention that they will only keep the one(s) that wind up being the best fit. In short order I saw 3 senior+ engineers hired within 2 weeks of eachother, after a few months only one of them would "make the cut".

Pros

Smart and hardworking coworkers, great culture that encourages work-life balance, supports learning and curiosity

Cons

Because it's a startup, your trajectory isn't mapped out like at a larger institution.
