Pros

Work-life balance, friendly co-workers. New CEO is extremely smart and capable.

Cons

Flat organization, extremely low pay esp. considering the wage disparity btwn the highest paid people in the organization and the average salary. The highest paid person makes nearly 50% more than those of similarly sized non-profits, yet the average employee here is severely underpaid. Most people who work here have been here for years, which leads to a fear of innovation and molasses-slow change. There is little accountability and an environment that easily hides incompetence and low performers often get rewarded for it. All departments are heavily siloed which discourages collaboration, esp between business and editorial floors.

Pros

EdWeek org structure and culture are very flat--everyone has the opportunity and encouragement to make critical, lasting contributions to the company. Company has weathered the storm facing media companies better than most by innovating product mix. Recently appointed CEO Michele Givens is fantastic--strategic, committed to developing and empowering her direct reports and the company at large, and committed to a culture of respect and teamwork. STrong vibe of teamwork and camraderie across the company. Work-life balance is great, maybe even to a fault. Great location in downtown Bethesda

Cons

This is a small company, which may constrain growth opportunities and career-pathing. IMHO, too much focus on parity in compensation as opposed to meritocracy; star performers may find themselves frustrated on the comp side, although there are examples too the contrary. You must have a strong stomach to work in k-12 not for profit media--corporate success is not guaranteed but needs to be earned 24/7 365. Culture is too humane, as marginal or even poor performers tend to be retained across long careers. Office space is pretty dreary.

Pros

Reporters are professional and collegial. Nice office space. Bike parking.

Cons

Bureaucratic. Lots of paper-work. A few senior people are bullies.
