Not a Great Place To Be, But Could Be

Pros

There are honestly not many. There is usually a lot of free food and there's a genuine sense of camaraderie among most of the staff. You also feel a sense of accomplishment and pride for what you're doing to help people move forward in their career and achieve a sense of prestige.

Cons

There is a TON of room for improvement. To start there has always been issues with communication and expectations. This has unfortunately only gotten worse since the company was bought two years ago by a venture capitalist firm. There isn't much room for upward mobility, despite promises by management to the contrary. The CEO doesn't live in the same state and runs the company from Texas so there isn't a sense of having them there and when they do come to the office they only sequester themselves in one office and don't connect with the rest of the staff. He never has spent any time with any of the plebes in the office and only the management team. The leadership also has a lot of room to grow. I don't have the time or space to list all of their issues but here's a quick summary: meetings being scheduled and either going off the rails quickly or never being held altogether, lack of training, lack of empathy and compassion to the employees and a lack of flexibility. Some departments have preferential treatment than others and have more benefits than others. There were a ton of broken promises and working here was one of the roughest experiences I've had. Tasks were sometimes handed over to someone with very little training or support and when things fell through the cracks, it was always a blame game and pointing fingers. There was never an understanding of why or how it happened and what could be done to fix it. The lack of general check-ins from management also contributed to this. They only paid attention or cared about something if it went poorly, never well. There was always a focus on what you did wrong and never what you did right. But if I can sum any of this up it would be when half of the staff including an entire department and two managers were let go over Teams. The entire staff was told earlier in the week to stay home as "the carpets were being cleaned" as a way to keep us from interacting with one another (they couldn't even keep the carpets cleaned to follow through on that either) and then they gathered everyone together for a call where we were told about this and it was totally tone deaf. It was all about how hard it was, praising the remaining leaders for coming up with a strategy to move forward and then how much they believed in the rest of the staff that was left. Then there were a ton of jokes being made the rest of the day and when they noted how bummed out everyone was ("Wow, you guys look really sad") and we told them it wasn't the time or place for jokes, they responded that "life moves on". Now I don't believe they're bad people, far from it as they have good intentions. But they're not doing an effective job at managing or communicating.
