Pros

Cool office - unlimited pto

Cons

The pros list is short because it’s hard to think of any when you have zero job security in almost any position within the company. Sure ekos was a fun place to work (in the beginning). They’ve got the snacks, beer, a cool office, and unlimited PTO. All of the things that are exciting to a new employee. However, none of that matters if you can’t keep the lights on. There is no accountability or structure. The sentiment when I joined the company was our customers weren’t very happy with our product and the sentiment when I left two years later was our customers weren’t happy with our product. ( now just charge 3x more for it) Ekos’s inability to adapt and act on feedback, mixed in with a total lack of accountability and structure, sprinkled with a few bad hires in upper leadership, has lead to a perfect storm that many people (including their competitors) don’t see them navigating through. Unfortunately they have been laying groups people off every couple of months for the last year and we didn’t change anything to prevent it. I remember when we had to layoff our first round of people we told the company it was a budget issue but then we turn around and cater a $2k lunch for the meeting we held to inform everyone of the layoffs… We had multiple entry level employees with their own brex credit cards running around buying stuff. We also purchased electric standing desks for the whole office that probably cost around $75k+ as we continue to laid people off. Now entire departments are empty but hey, the desks look great.

Ekos Response

Thank you for sharing your experience at Ekos. Over the past year, we have been navigating a rapidly changing business environment, which has required us to adapt and pivot our business strategy to meet the needs of our customers and remain the dominant platform in the marketplace. We are encouraged to hear that most of our employees have expressed agreement and support for the strategic shifts we have made. Unfortunately, this change in business strategy has led to some necessary layoffs, primarily impacting our Sales & Marketing organizations. We want to assure you that we take the handling of layoffs very seriously, and we strive to do so with transparency, compassion, and support for our former colleagues as they transition to new opportunities. In addition, we believe in continuous improvement and have made huge strides to increase accountability within our teams and provide clarity to employees regarding their roles and responsibilities. We have implemented a 360 peer feedback process and revised our OKR process to enable transparency and clarity at all times. We understand your frustrations during this time and remain committed to helping during this period.

Pros

The cons far outweigh any positives.

Cons

Here are the major issues I encountered: 1 Lack of Vision: Ekos seemed to lack a clear and cohesive vision for the future. Senior leadership frequently changed the company's direction, leaving employees confused and demotivated. This inconsistency made it difficult to align teams and work towards common goals. It felt like the leadership was more interested in short-term gains rather than investing in a long-term strategy. 2 Poor Communication: The communication from senior leadership was abysmal. Important updates and decisions were often kept behind closed doors, leading to rumors and speculation among employees. There was a lack of transparency, and it created an environment of mistrust and uncertainty. It was frustrating not to have a clear understanding of the company's direction and how our work contributed to the overall goals. 3 Ineffective Decision-Making: The decision-making process at Ekos was flawed and inefficient. Senior leaders frequently made decisions without seeking input from the teams directly affected by those choices. This led to poorly informed decisions that didn't take into account the expertise and experience of the employees. As a result, we often had to backtrack or redo work due to sudden changes in direction. 4 Lack of Leadership Support: Senior leadership showed a remarkable lack of support for their teams. When challenges arose, they were quick to point fingers and assign blame rather than working collaboratively to find solutions. There was a noticeable absence of mentorship and guidance from the top, which hindered personal and professional growth for many employees. 5 High Turnover: The combination of poor leadership and inconsistent strategy resulted in a high turnover rate. Talented individuals became frustrated with the lack of stability and clarity, ultimately leading them to seek employment elsewhere. This constant churn disrupted team dynamics and made it difficult to maintain a cohesive and productive work environment. In conclusion, my time at Ekos was marred by the company's poor senior leadership and inconsistent strategy. The lack of vision, ineffective decision-making, poor communication, and the absence of support from senior leaders created a toxic work environment. I would not recommend Ekos to anyone seeking a stable and supportive workplace.

Pros

Unlimited PTO, Great office, Great employees, Interesting Industry

Cons

Shrinking available market with no concrete plan to expand & grow, Extreme lack of structure and consistency from senior Leadership, Job Security (many rounds of layoffs this past year), A radically ineffective system of intra-company communication, escalation, and recognition, Secretive, closed-door decision making, A devolving company culture spurred by everything mentioned above
