      Mass Layoffs and an Uncertain Future for the Company

      Pros

      Great team members and great products.

      Cons

      75% of the workforce was let go in 2023 through multiple rounds of layoffs. It all happened very quickly without any prior notice. It is particularly surprising considering the company's significant investments in new offices and overspending in various areas in the past few years. It is truly shocking that they had to resort to employee cuts without even considering the performance of each individual.

      At Ember I've worked with some of the smartest, best people I've ever met. We've built awesomely innovative products, filling niches in the market, and working on cutting edge technology. The products have a strict adherence to Apple-esque design standards, which pushes the engineering team to innovate only the best ideas. I've really enjoyed my time here.

      Cons

      The company has been completely mismanaged & as of May 2023 roughly 2/3 of the company have been laid off.

      Amazing culture that promotes creativity and teamwork, set up well for remote/hybrid work, amazing products that people truly love and provides a good benefits/perks package.

      Cons

      Unfortunately, Ember is going through growing pains like most of the tech industry. It's understandable that managing growth had to be complicated with the boom/bust cycle of covid times vs. high interest rate times, however, it ultimately is the responsibility of the CEO/senior leadership to think ahead and manage risk. It's a really difficult situation when you endure two rounds of layoffs in the first few months of the year, immediately after building a new office space with custom skylights for a tree that was craned inside the office, five-figure coffee machines, custom fireplaces and other unnecessary large purchases such as this. It's difficult to truly believe in how senior leadership is running this company and hopefully they can learn from these mistakes and get things back on a successful path.
