Decent - Software Developer {SAW} Software Mill Employee Review

Pros

Relaxed atmosphere, highly focused on collaboration and cross training. Benefits are decent, pay is decent for the area (better than my last, similar job). Advancement opportunities exist

Cons

Somewhat disorganized (not too unexpected for a startup), restrictive non-compete/protective covenants agreement (employees are not allowed to develop anything on their own without presenting it to management and potentially turning rights over to the company, regardless of whether or not it is related in any way to the work the company does).

Pros

I love my coworkers and bosses! The atmosphere is relaxed. You'll want to be productive because you will enjoy it! I love the location as well, so much to do -- a YMCA, restaurants, bars, trail, movie theater...

Cons

Our work is pretty intimidating for the first week or so, but after that the intimidation clears.

Pros

Coworkers work hard with knowledge transfer. Agile work environment. Free sodas. Occasionally free lunch during "optional" company updates. Pressure makes it feel mandatory to attend. Located in a nice area with different food choices and movie theatre.

Cons

Direction is horrible. Management pushes tasks out to prevent failure of a sprint then sneak major development to happen by a team lead during a non-development Sprint. The following Sprint then gets changed to implement and unit test the functionality. This isn't the first time this activity happens. It seems to be a regular basis. Benefits are barley nominal. The CEO constantly threatens subordinates on firing everyone if sprints are not completed on time. Which goes back to management hiding tasks. The other issue is failed promises after failed promises. CEO constantly says salaries will be reviewed then keeps putting meetings and salaries off. Don't fall for this trap when being starting out. Google the company and you may see articles showing the software working in. It's not a language you will take anywhere else in your career. I'd be surprised if this company makes it to this time next year at this rate. I predict most of the developers will continue to leave as promises continue to be broken.
