Pros

You get a paycheck. Better than nothing. Remote work is available for those who want flexibility.

Cons

Toxic environment. Very high turnover and huge workload (60+ hours per week between February - April). Messy clients who only provide everything you need a small percentage of the time. Micromanagement and pressure to meet KPIs, even though returns cannot get done timely due to clients not providing what we need. Low/below average pay, especially for a location like Manhattan with a sky-high cost of living. Also, a large majority of the people working here have multiple years of experience, so it creates an even more toxic environment for those who are just trying to keep their head above water while having to work their first-ever tax season. Managers are also rude and do not give a hoot about their employees and their other life obligations - they just care if returns get done, regardless of the conditions on the ground with the clients who have no idea what they are doing.

Pros

Excellent support during training and the nesting period. They genuinely want to see you succeed and are willing to do whatever they can to help you grow. Has shown genuine care for my success and well-being. Great opportunity to make great money and turn a 9-5 into something that will be a well paying career. What you put into growing and learning you will get back. If you put the effort forward and take in everything they teach you(and there is no limitation for learning material) you WILL be successful! They legitimately offer a service that small businesses need and it feels great getting people signed up for something people genuinely need and will benefit from.

Cons

Can't work overtime in the nesting period. Has many opportunities to better yourself and make great money. The only con i can think of is that insurance benefits aren't that great.

Pros

I want to respond to some of the reviews that mention micromanagement. In my experience, the company is not very hands-on if you are performing well. If you are taking care of clients, meeting expectations, and doing your work, the environment can be extremely flexible. There have been times where I was able to work for days without anyone looking over my shoulder. The benefits are solid, the flexibility is great, and overall I have had a positive experience with the company. For hardworking people who care about customer service, 1-800Accountant can be a good place to work.

Cons

The biggest issue I have seen is the technical quality of the tax preparation and review process. In my experience, the majority of preparers, reviewers, and managers are not credentialed and are not capable of properly handling complex tax returns. This creates a serious quality-control problem. Many returns appear to include numbers or entries that may be favorable to the client, but are not necessarily technically correct or properly supported. The end result is that clients may receive returns that look beneficial on the surface but contain errors they may not understand or even know about. I also believe promotions are often based more on popularity or internal relationships than actual tax knowledge. This is a problem in a tax preparation environment where technical skill, accuracy, and professional judgment should matter most. Some people in senior or management positions appear to rely heavily on others to answer more complex tax questions. Collaboration is normal, but when managers cannot confidently answer technical questions themselves, it creates issues for employees, reviewers, and clients.
